Kanwaljit started his acting career at the age of 17. He started his career with the Hindi film ‘Shankar Hussain’ as Inaam Husain in 1977.
He has acted in many other Hindi films including Ashanti (1982), Jeevan Ek Sanghursh (1990), Kuchh Meetha Ho Jaye (2005), Raazi (2018), and Sardar Ka Grandson (2021).
Punjabi movie
Kanwaljit has also starred in many Punjabi films such as Jee Aayan Nu (2002), Asa Nu Maan Watna Da (2004), Dil Apna Punjabi (2006), Mitti Wajaan Maardi (2007), and Kaptaan (2016).
Television
Kanwaljit made his television debut with the Hindi show ‘Buniyaad’ as Satbir in 1986.
He has also featured in other Hindi shows which include The Sword of Tipu Sultan (1990), Bible Ki Kahaniya (1993), Farmaan (1994), Daraar (1994), and Saans (1998).

- In 2009, he won the Parivaar STAR Award for Favorite Tape for the Hindi show ‘Sabki Laadli Bebo’.

- Kanwaljit Singh is fondly called as Kuku by his friends and family members.
- Kanwaljit appeared for the NDA Airforce and Merchant Navy exams at the age of 17. He was rejected because of hearing problems.
- Later, he became interested in acting, and he applied for an acting course at FTII. He held an audition in Delhi. In an interview, he said that he had no knowledge of acting. In the audition, he read the lines of the script in the style of Dev Anand, and the judges were completely disappointed.
- Kanwaljit was very uncomfortable when he was exposed to the environment of Mumbai, but later he adapted to the lifestyle and got used to it.
- The government has ordered that actors above the age of 65 will not be allowed to shoot after the lockdown ends in 2020. He raised his voice against the rule and in an interview, he said,
This rule needs to be changed. If not, what will hundreds of actors like me do? We love to work, we love our work, how can the government stop us? Will the authorities take notice when a senior actor, depressed due to lack of work, commits suicide? Not every senior actor or unit member is in a good position to get through these tough times by just sitting at home, not working. Most of them have to work, some for financial reasons, others for sheer love of work.”
- After more than 30 years of experience, in an interview, he gave advice to new actors and said,
If you feel that working here is as important as breathing, this is the industry for you, be patient and stay focused; the struggle is there however; if you are good, you will succeed.”
- In 2014, his son went through a tough time in the Srinagar floods. In an interview, his son Aditya who is an artist recounted their experience and said,
There was no food and we started eating in mosques and cemeteries. The cemetery is located behind the mountain, where the locals serve food so politely and generously. We also eat at the mosque. They would give us a lot of rice and a spoonful of dal. We didn’t even think of offering them money because they did it with love and generosity. They expect nothing but love from us. On the other hand, there are people who charge `4,000 per blanket per night.”
