Actress Karen Allen opens up about what it’s like to work with Harrison Ford again in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
The two first shared the screen together in 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Although he only has a very brief appearance in 2023’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” Allen talked about how his relationship with the “Star Wars” cast has “evolved” over the years.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Allen said that their relationship has “developed in a wonderful, wonderful way” and admitted that they didn’t know each other at all when they were filming “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” He said, at that time, their approach to acting was very different, because he was used to performing in the theater. He’s used to rehearsing and talking through scenes with other actors.
However, Ford came from a different background. He prefers to do the work himself and then show up ready to rehearse the scene. Allen recalled that Ford “wasn’t interested in running a line or doing anything like that.” Although the two have different approaches to acting, Allen says, “We work together really well; I just have to make adjustments so I feel like I know what I’m doing myself.”

He also said that he learned a lot from Ford, such as how to work with the camera. “The films I had made up to that point, I mostly tried to forget the camera was there, but in a film like this you really work with the camera a lot of the time,” he explained. “You have to know where it is, you have to be able to work with it. I’m learning that skill by the seat of my pants.”
He said that he learned a lot just by watching the 80-year-old Ford in “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” However, when they meet again for “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” their relationship is much different. “It’s like getting together with old friends and reconnecting with these characters,” he said. “It was just a beautiful, easy and breezy experience. This time [in Dial of Destiny], it’s short but sweet. It’s very simple. But it’s fun to come in at the end and see these characters come together and get back together.

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” marks the fifth and final time Harrison Ford will play Indiana Jones. Karen Allen admitted that she hoped Marion would play a bigger role in Indy’s final adventure, saying, “I’m down for anything, any way they want to bring her back into the story. I’m 100% there.”
He stated that there would be “changes and changes” when Steven Spielberg would direct the film. However, he handed over the reins to James Mangold. Although he hasn’t read the script yet, Allen said that he knows “how Marion will be a part of the story.”

The 71-year-old actor later explained, “When it switched to directing James Mangold and suddenly he brought in a new writer, the Butterworth brothers. [Jez and John-Henry], then I really don’t know if I will be in the movie or not. It is a new beginning. I think it was when they felt their script was finally done, it came to me, and they wrote this role at the end of the movie for Marion to come back.
“I can’t say that there wasn’t an initial disappointment in the sense that I wasn’t part of the adventure of this story,” he admitted. “But at the same time, there’s a sense of gratitude that Marion will be back in the story, and if this is indeed the last film of the series, it ends on a very optimistic note for her character. Because she’s a passionate person, a great character, and it would break my heart to see him just disappear into the ether.
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is now in theaters.
