White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre insisted on Thursday that President Biden is doing “everything” he can to combat the surge of immigrants at the southern border and she accused Republicans of doing nothing.
“We have taken steps without the help of Republicans in Congress to do everything we can to address this issue,” Jean-Pierre told reporters at the White House.
“And don’t forget what the Republicans proposed, their continuing resolution, lead [to] 800 [Customs and Border Protection] agents and officers fired.”
Jean-Pierre later criticized the GOP’s decision to block a procedural vote on the defense spending bill.
“That’s what they proposed just a day ago, and that’s what will be done to the border. It will be hurtful and harmful and not address the issue,” he said.
“So they’re doing the opposite of what the president is trying to do, which is actually moving forward in a humane, safe way and having an orderly enforcement pathway process here.”

However, House Republicans supported a continuing resolution to keep the government open until Oct. 31 saying it would actually improve border security, including by funding continued border wall construction and authorizing the hiring of 22,000 more Customs agents.
When asked about the shocking report that 10,000 migrants crossed the southern border on Wednesday alone, Jean-Pierre declined to answer and tried to blame Republicans in Congress before moving on.
“So what do you call here at the White House when 10,000 people illegally cross the border in one day?” Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked a White House spokesman.

“So what do you call, Peter, when [the] The GOP put forward … wait, no, no, no, no, no, you can’t,” Jean-Pierre said, speaking over Doocy as he tried to redirect Jean-Pierre back to his question.
“You answered my question with a question,” said Doocy.
“OK, we’ll continue,” Jean-Pierre said, shutting the reporter up.
Conservatives were outraged by the White House’s response to the border security question, accusing the president and Jean-Pierre of refusing to take responsibility and not caring about the issue.
“This is the Biden White House playbook: Refuse to take responsibility for the problems YOU created and when someone challenges you, ignore them. Clown show. The border will only get worse under this administration,” said Colin Rugg, a conservative commentator, in a tweet.
“Joe Biden doesn’t seem to care. Karine Jean-Pierre doesn’t seem to mind. And I know [Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas] don’t care because we have asked him many questions, asking for information and data that he refuses to give us,” said Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) in an interview with Fox News after Jean-Pierre’s briefing.
“So this is the state of this administration. And frankly I think Joe Biden’s approval rating is very low, because they see the pathetic job that this administration has done.”

Jordan added that the effects of the border crisis are being seen in “every town, every city, every community” because the “volume, the number” of immigrants entering the US is “so high.”
“Finally! KJP is right!” former Arkansas Republican Gov. Mike Huckabee said in a mocking tweet. “Biden has taken historic action. He messed up the entire immigration process by ignoring the law & common sense & single handedly making a mess at our border. Don’t forget the ‘border czar’ Kamala Harris and her ‘historic’ act.”
The Biden administration announced Wednesday that up to 800 additional US troops would be sent to the southern border, but they would not be directly involved with new immigrants.
Active duty personnel will focus on “logistics and other functions at the border to allow more Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents and officers to return to their core missions and responsibilities,” the Department of Homeland Security said.
