At first I wrote poems – notebooks and notebooks full of them. But I didn’t know you could “be a poet”. I don’t understand how someone can. I will send the poem to the newspaper. No one ever wrote back of course. I think that’s why I studied Journalism in the end. That’s the only way I think I can, possibly, make any money writing.

I never planned for those tendrils and mandalas, the feathers and fine mesh all happened by accident, quite by chance. There was a deer there because a girl I loved called me one. There are flowers that always bloom. There is value in the bride’s henna falling on the sleeve of the black dress.”

  • In a conversation with media house ‘Platform’, she asked about her inspiration to write her first book titled ‘The Heart Asks Pleasure First.’ This book is the romance of an Indian-Pakistani couple. He told,

In 2003 I met a group of Pakistani boys and became deeply embedded in a friendship that felt like home and family. Our conversations and relationships over the years have become the lens through which I see Indo-Pak relations in a certain light – without politics, full of commonalities. The story began to develop at that time and I knew I always wanted to write something that dealt with the complexities of that friendship but that was rooted in today and not in the time of the breakup. Yes, it is impossible to write about India and Pakistan together without referring to 1947, but there is a new story to tell as well.”

    He further added,

Over the past two decades, the way we see Islam has also changed, globally, and the need to tell my story has grown. It finally fell into place when I met a man who made me question everything I knew about love. I’ve been told that I “only write love stories” and maybe that’s true, but aren’t all stories love stories? When I combine my great learning of love with the anger and frustration I’ve felt politically for so long, a story is ready to be written.”
