Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs started this year’s gubernatorial race as the favorite among Democrats. Hobbs was found not guilty of all charges. Criminal charges have not been filed. While serving as his attorney in federal court, Adams would file and win two civil cases alleging sex and race discrimination. The lawsuit was filed against the Arizona State Senate. Hobbs was not named as a defendant. However, Hobbs, his chief of staff, and the head of the Senate Republican team in charge of Senate operations all testified.
During the second trial, Hobbs testified that he had “lost trust” in Adams, in part because Adams took an emergency leave to care for his son out of state. Many of Hobbs’ critics claim that taxpayers have already paid millions of dollars as a result of the court’s judgment. Adams was found to be a victim of racial and sexual discrimination and retaliation by a second jury last year, and she was awarded $2.75 million in damages. However, federal law limits total damages to $30,000 per occurrence. After taking into account back wages and deferred benefits, the court awarded Adams $353,000 in damages.
