Career
Kaushal Kishore started his political journey when he joined the Communist Party of India (CPI) in the 1980s. In 1989, he contested the state elections in UP on a CPI ticket from the Malihabad Scheduled Caste reserved constituency. In the election, Kaushal managed to secure 8,992 votes but was defeated by the Janata Dal candidate, Jagdish Chandra. Kaushal, as a CPI candidate, contested the 1991 UP Legislative Assembly elections from Malihabad constituency against Janata Dal candidate Ashok Kumar. Kaushal lost the election by a margin of 37,808 votes. In the 1993 UP state assembly elections, Samajwadi Party’s Gauri Shankar defeated CPI candidate Kaushal by a margin of 6,418 votes in the Malihabad constituency. In 1998, from the Mohanganj Scheduled Caste reserved constituency, Kaushal contested the general elections on a ticket from the CPI. He lost the election but managed to secure 39,273 votes. After the CPI sacked Kaushal in 2001, he contested the 2002 UP Assembly elections as an independent candidate and defeated Gauri Shankar by a margin of 25,535 votes. From 2002 to 2007, Kaushal served as an MLA. In 2002, Kaushal founded the Rashtrawadi Communist Party (RCP). After Mulayam Singh Yadav was sworn in as the Chief Minister of UP, he invited Kaushal to join the Samajwadi Party-led government by offering him the post of Labor Minister in 2003. Kaushal accepted the offer, but he resigned as minister in 2004 as disagreements between him and the CM grew. increased. In 2004, as an RCP candidate, Kaushal contested and lost the Lok Sabha elections from Mohanlalganj constituency. In the election, he obtained 28,757 votes. As an RCP candidate, Kaushal contested the 2012 UP state election from Malihabad constituency where he emerged as the runner-up candidate securing 60,567 votes, while SP candidate Indal Kumar received 62,782 votes and won the election. Kaushal merged the RCP with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) before joining the BJP in 2013. Later, Kaushal was appointed as the State President of the UP Scheduled Caste Wing of the BJP. In 2014, Kaushal contested the Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket and emerged victorious after defeating Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate RK Chaudhary by a margin of 1,45,416 votes. In the election, Kaushal received a total of 4,55,274 votes. As a Member of Parliament, Kaushal was appointed as a Member of the Standing Committee on Internal Affairs and the Consultation Committee of the Ministry of Labor and Employment. He served in both committees from 1 September 2014 to 31 August 2018. He served in the Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law, and Justice as a member from 1 September 2018 to 25 May 2019. On a BJP ticket, Kaushal contested in 2019 Lok Sabha election from Mohanlalganj constituency against BSP candidate CL Verma. He defeated the BSP candidate with 90,229 votes. Subsequently, the Narendra Modi-led central government appointed Kaushal as the Union Minister of State for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Controversy
A dispute between the family of Kaushal Kishore and his daughter-in-law
In March 2021, after some unknown gunmen opened fire on Kaushal’s son Ayush, he was hospitalized in Lucknow. Later, Ayush blamed his wife, Ankita, and his brother-in-law for the attack. The police, however, later released a statement and said that Ayush had planned the attack on himself to lay a trap for his wife. Later, Ankita uploaded a video on social media and said that she would try to commit suicide and the responsibility of her death lies on Kaushal, Ayush, and Jai Devi, her mother-in-law. After uploading the video, he went to Kaushal’s house and slashed his wrist. He was immediately admitted to the hospital, where doctors saved his life. Later, Kaushal, in his defense, told the media that Kishore’s family had nothing to do with Ankita and Ayush as they had severed all ties with both of them after their love marriage. In June 2021, Ashish Singh, Ankita’s father, accused Kaushal of kidnapping his daughter after she went missing. During the interview, Ashish said that after Ankita’s abduction, he sent a message to his family and told them that Ayush’s brother Vikas Kishore and his friend Armaan Gazi had kidnapped her. The police claimed that the alleged kidnapping against Kishore’s family could be part of a conspiracy as Ankita’s family did not file a missing complaint with the police. Kishore denied the allegations and called them “false and baseless.”
Insensitive remarks about Shraddha Walker
In November 2022, Kaushal Kishore made a controversial statement about Shraddha Walker, blaming her for his brutal murder. He also said that educated girls cannot have direct relationships and must take lessons from “the uneducated girls.” He also advises girls to marry the groom chosen by their parents. Kaushal, during an interview, said,
It is the girls’ responsibility too, because they leave their parents, who have raised them for years, all at once. Why do they live in a direct relationship. If they need to do so, there should be proper registration for direct contact. If the parents are not openly ready for such a relationship, you should have a court marriage and then live together. Most educated girls are in straight relationships. Lessons should be taken from this incident and uneducated girls. Those who have been raised by their parents should live with someone according to their wishes. This has to stop. The government has been spreading awareness about it from time to time…but will now do some decision-making work to curb such incidents.”
Calling the remarks about Shraddha “heartless and cruel,” Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remove Kishore from his appointment.

- Kaushal Kishore started an anti-drug campaign called Nasha Mukt Samaj Andolan-Abhiyan Kaushal Ka after his son Akash Kishore died on 19 October 2020 due to alcoholism. In August 2022, Kishore started another anti-drug campaign called Hindustaniyo Nasha Chodo. During an interview, while talking about launching an anti-drug campaign, Kaushal said,
I lost my son (Aakash Kishore) to alcohol in October 2020 and after that I promised to make India drug free. Then I started a campaign and so far 18 lakh people have taken a vow not to do drugs and 10,000 have stopped using drugs as well. Even though I am an MP and my wife is an MLA, we could not save her. While poison kills instantly, any addiction like alcohol and substance abuse kills a person very slowly. We need to protect those who are not yet addicted to alcohol or any other substance. As India is celebrating Azadi Ka Amrit Mohastuv, we have decided to launch another anti-drug campaign ‘Hindustaniyo Nasha Chodo’ on August 9 at Delhi University Sports Complex.”

- In 2021, Kaushal Kishore demanded an inquiry into allegations raised by witnesses of the Malegaon Blasts 2008. According to witnesses, the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of the Mumbai Police had forced him to name Yogi Adityanath and the RSS as conspirators of the bomb blasts.
