Kelly Clarkson Is Putting Her Foot Down Regarding One Rule For Her Kids

Kelly Clarkson is not only a powerful vocalist but also a strict mother, especially when it comes to what goes on under her roof!

The “Stronger” hitmaker shares daughter River Rose and son Remington “Remy” Alexander with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. She recently opened up about co-parenting her two children, the firm rules she won’t break, and why she’s not a “helicopter mom.”

Kelly Clarkson’s Kids Banned From Social Media Until They Grow Up

There are many perks to being a Clarkson kid, but being a young influencer or keeping up with the latest trends is off the table. In a new interview, the 41-year-old discussed his parenting skills, noting that his children are banned from social media.

According to the Texas sensation, her children’s lack of social media accounts is the one rule she will never break to protect them from the negative effects of the internet. She understands the downsides of being a celebrity and wants to protect her children from it. In his words:

“That can be very difficult for children in general but especially children whose parents are in the public eye. So I have informed them that they are not allowed, under my roof, at all [it].”

The social media ban could be a tricky situation given her co-parenting relationship with Blackstock. However, her ex-husband followed her wishes and made sure their children did not break the rules under his watch.

Although Blackstock doesn’t follow the social media ban in her home, Clarkson claims she doesn’t mind. She remembers her cheeky daughter teasing her about the social media ban in her cover story PEOPLEsaid:

“My daughter was like, ‘Well, what if Dad lets me?’ I was like, ‘Well, you’re there four days a month. Enjoy that.’ And now, he wouldn’t let them do it either. I’ll listen when they’re older, but until they have a solid argument, it’s not.”

So, what does co-parenting feel like? It’s “very different [for everyone],” Clarkson explained, noting that “it was harder at first” because “there was a lot of emotion and trauma involved.” But as time went on, “it got easier.” He went on to say:

“It’s quite difficult when you’re married and come from two backgrounds and different ways of disciplining and educating. Doing that in a different household can be difficult.”

On motherhood, Clarkson admits she can be hard on herself but believes she’s doing a “pretty good job” raising her two children. He emphasizes that there are no perfect parents, including himself, in his words:

“I’m definitely not a helicopter mom. I like them to be independent, but I stick to my schedule, making sure I’m there as much as I can. No parent is perfect; I must have messed my kids up somehow! But I do my best.”

Meet Kelly Clarkson’s Two Children

Clarkson welcomed her adorable little angel during her wedding to Blackstock. The former couple first met in February 2012 at Super Bowl XLVI and eloped the following year. They spent seven years together before the famous vocalist filed for divorce due to irreconcilable differences.

Their split was finalized in March 2022, with the “Since U Been Gone” singer winning primary custody of their two children. Although things were still bright, the then-loved couple announced they were expecting their first child four weeks after their wedding.

They welcomed their daughter, River Rose, in Nashville on June 12, 2014. The now 9-year-old Angel started waving at 2 when she joined her mom in the 2016 Nashville Christmas Parade.

River also inspired Clarkson’s 2016 children’s book, “River Rose and the Magical Lullaby.” This sparked more stories about mother and child adventures around the world.

In a 2018 interview, the proud mother claimed her daughter had the talent of an entrepreneur. “He will run a company one day because there is no way he will work for anyone. He ignores advice well. He’s very agile, that’s great.” Clarkson raved, adding:

“I like it [River] very brave, and he is progressive for 3,” added the singer. “He watches Jurassic Park and loves it, and Harry Potter … it doesn’t affect him, and he’s just very grown up and very bossy.”

Clarkson doesn’t play favorites, as she has had sweeter things to say about her son Remy, who was welcomed on April 12, 2016. Unfortunately, the little boy suffered from hearing problems and delayed speech development when he was young.

“He has a speech problem because he had this ear problem when he was a baby. We don’t know,” Clarkson explained in 2020. “But deep in his ear, he’s stuffed with a ton of wax where we think, almost, he’s deaf because he’s talking like he’s underwater.”
