During a recent appearance on the “Angie Martinez IRL” podcast, the 40-year-old reflected on her children’s emotional state following their father’s departure from her life. The episode shared on the host’s YouTube page captures the women in a heart-to-heart discussion.
The “Breakaway” singer, who shares daughter River Rose and son Remington “Remy” Alexander with her ex-husband, noted that she routinely checks in with her children to talk about their feelings.
“I literally ask my kids every night when we cuddle, ‘Are you happy? And if you’re not, what could make you happier?'” Clarkson explained on the March 13 episode of the podcast.
“Sometimes they’ll say, especially the last two years, and it kills me, and I want them to be honest, so I never say, ‘Oh my god, don’t tell me that,’ but a lot of times it’ll be like, ‘You know, I’m really sad. I hope mom and dad are in the same house.’”
The talk show host noted that she encourages honesty in her children, admitting that she is proud to raise “the type of individual” who can be honest about feelings. Although the mother of two finds the truth painful, she understands her children’s desire for their parents’ reconciliation.
As someone who grew up in a similar situation, the Grammy winner empathizes with her children’s emotions. “I just sat there, and I was like, ‘I get it. I’m from a divorced family, too. I get it. It sucks,” the 40-year-old said. “But we’re going to work it out. And we both love you so much. ‘”
The “Because of You” singer stated that communicating in an understanding manner is important to ensure her children adjust to their family situation. “I think communicating with them and not treating them—not treating them like adults, because they’re not—but not treating them like children,” explained the TV personality.
“They are not small feelings. It’s a big feeling, and it’s a big emotion,” continued the Texan. Clarkson added that his children often try to gauge his feelings, curious about how he feels about their father.
“My kids always ask me, ‘So you don’t love him anymore?'” the Daytime Emmy winner shared, “I’m like, ‘No, I don’t know if it’s going to go away.'” On planning for a second marriage, the singer the blonde revealed she’s open to dating but not taking another trip down the aisle.
Although the entertainer assured Martinez that he is not against marriage, the talk show host stated that he needs to prioritize the well-being of his children. “I haven’t had the most positive experience with the step-and-remarry situation,” Clarkson admitted.
“I didn’t have the most positive situations growing up. I would never do that to my children. I want to fall in love, but I don’t want another man in my house with my children,” added the doting mother.

The former couple agreed to joint custody of their children. However, they will be in Los Angeles with their mother. The deal resulted in the “Catch My Breath” singer making a $50,000 “reimbursement” payment to Blackstock for private air transportation to visit the businessman.
At the time, the talent manager lived on the former couple’s Montana ranch. However, the property belongs to Clarkson, and Blackstock is required to pay his ex-wife $2,000 a month until she moves out in June.
