While many were waiting for Ken Jennings to make a statement about Mayim’s departure on social media, the trivia guru waited until an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to break the silence on Mayim’s exit from the show.

“It made me lose control, because I love working with my Mayim and I will miss her. I can’t talk about his decision-making process or what he thinks about it,” he explained. “But at the end of the day, I’m just a fan of Jeopardy! and I’m always happy to host when they call me. I feel very fortunate to have been considered for this job as a non-broadcaster.”

“It’s a strange thing to try to bring back a former contestant to host, and I’ve obviously learned as I go. But I loved growing up with Jeopardy! where Alex hosted the show for almost 38 years, and people felt like he was part of their family, and it’s impossible to fill those shoes,” he continued. “But it’s an honor and I hope I look forward to another 37 years to do it, when I’ll be a very old man.”

Ken Jennings Talks What It’s Like Being on ‘Jeopardy!’ host

In the same interview, Ken talked more about what it’s like to host “Jeopardy!” and how much improvisation is required.

“I found that as a host, it’s more like being a war correspondent where you really have to be prepared for anything to happen. You can’t have a game plan because if someone is riffing or someone doesn’t understand the rules, you just have to go with it and try to keep the game moving,” he explained. “And luckily, the game pushes itself forward and celebrities catch that vibe, but it makes it really fun and unpredictable for me, too.”

Ken Jennings will return to host “Celebrity Jeopardy!” when the semifinals and finals air beginning on ABC on Tuesday, January 2, at 8 p.m. ET. Utkarsh Ambudkar (ghost), Mira Sorvino (Shining Valley), and Lisa Ann Walter (Abbott low level) will compete during the first round of the semi-finals.
