A Kentucky groundhog died on Groundhog Day — just days after predicting the start of spring.
Major, a nearly 10-year-old rat meteorologist who lives at Second Chances Wildlife Center, peacefully succumbed overnight to heart problems brought on by his age, center staff said.

“He was full of amazing energy until the end. He will forever be in our hearts. It is a sad day for us at the Center, especially for those who have been with us all their lives,” said the protection announced on Facebook.
“We know you’re sad too. Hugs to all our friends. Know that he is calmly eating food, going for walks, and ringing all the bells.
The Second Chance Wildlife Center expected Major’s death, saying he had been in poor health for some time. Groundhogs typically live up to 6 years in the wild, but can live to see 14 in captivity, according to the Wildlife Rescue League.
Brigitte Brouillard estimated that Major’s predictions were accurate 50% of the time. Second Chances Wildlife Center/Facebook Major was rescued by Second Chances Wildlife Center as a baby. Second Chances Wildlife Center/Facebook
Major has lived at the shelter since he was rescued as a baby, and has spent the last decade making predictions about Groundhog Day.
“I would say Major is probably 50-50 predicting the weather,” shelter founder Brigitte Brouillard told Lex18 just days before his death.
This past Groundhog Day was the first time the Major had stepped out of the limelight to deliver a fortune telling task to his young friend, Josie Burrow.

At 7 a.m. Friday, he predicted the start of spring — a prediction Brouillard joked Major made himself earlier this week and passed on to his protégé.
“He was a bit nervous about what to do so of course Major took care of it. He pressed and rang his bell to get out of his cage. When we let her out, she went straight to Josie to train her. Great teamwork,” said the shelter.
