Kentucky mom loses arms, legs in ‘perfect storm’ over kidney stone infection

A mother of two woke up in a Kentucky hospital with both of her legs amputated — and learned she would soon lose her arms, too — in a “perfect storm” that started with gallstones, according to a new report.

Lucinda “Cindy” Mullins, 41, a longtime nurse, underwent treatment for kidney stones several weeks ago, WLEX reported.

But Mullins’ medical story didn’t end there – his stone soon became infected, and he became septic.

“It’s pretty rare,” Mullins told of the life-changing chain of events. “It was the perfect storm — on the reef.”

He was rushed from Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford to UK Hospital in Lexington – where he was sedated for several days, the outlet reported.

When he woke up, his leg was gone from the knee down – and doctors explained that to save his life, his arm had to go too.

Cindy Mullins, 41, needed a quadruple amputation in a “perfect storm” that started with kidney stones.

“I’ve lost my legs from the knee down bilaterally and I’m going to lose my arms probably below the elbows bilaterally,” Mullins said. “The doctor I worked with, he was like, ‘this is what they have to do to save your life, this is what happened.'”

But Mullins took the shocking medical news in stride – stressing that the decision now gives her the chance to spend more time with her DJ husband and young son.

“I am very happy to be alive,” he said. “I was able to see my children. I can see my family. I was able to spend time with my husband. That’s a small thing at this point.”

Mullins said she is grateful for the opportunity to spend more time with her husband and son.

“I just said, ‘These are the cards I’ve been dealt and these are the hands I’m going to play,'” he added.

As word of his condition began to spread, Mullins received an outpouring of support.

“At one point I think they told [me] 40 people are in the waiting room here,” he told the station. “Calls and texts, prayers and things sent by humans. Little words of encouragement.”

“I couldn’t understand that people would do such a thing to me.”

A GoFundMe page for the Mullins family had raised nearly $105,000 by Sunday afternoon.

As of Sunday afternoon, a GoFundMe page for the Mullins family had raised nearly $105,000 of its $250,000 goal.

“We started this fundraiser because we want to support our hero Cindy, as well as her husband DJ who has been by her side every step of the way,” loved ones wrote on the page.

“Cindy and DJ have two young children who miss their mother and father very much. Sometimes life is hard and there is no way out. Cindy and DJ’s world has completely stopped, but the world around them keeps moving forward.”
