Kerry Washington has been reflecting on deeply hidden traumas from her childhood.
The details of the trauma were revealed in her emotional memoir, “Thicker Than Water,” in which she recounts the intense and intense conflict her parents often experienced during her formative years. The stress and fear of this encounter took its toll on the youngster’s mind, eventually causing him to suffer panic attacks at the age of seven.
Kerry Washington Reveals Childhood Panic Attacks Triggered By Her Parents’ Turbulent Relationship
In an excerpt of her upcoming memoir published by Oprah Daily, Washington revealed that she “developed panic attacks at night” at such a young age from hearing her parents argue after she fell asleep. Reflecting on what often leads to these contentious moments, the “Scandal” actor stated each time:
“From what I remember, most of my parents’ fights were about money, and about the fact that neither of them felt they were in the marriage they wanted, or rather, that they were married to the person they wanted. to marry him.”
The famous actor explained that his parents were burdened with frustration about the presence of their lives, with their inner turmoil causing them to engage in heated arguments mixed with long-standing anger.
Despite their best attempts to project an organized facade around their children and the rest of the family, their constant fighting soon sends Washington into a panic attack. As he wrote:
“First they materialized as a rhythm of anxiety that enveloped my brain, then developed into a rapid pulse, a swirling metallic thud, like the old sickening merry-go-round at the county fair.”
The “Little Fires Everywhere” star likened the ordeal to hearing “the sound of terror”, a jarring sensation that was thrown out of her heart’s natural rhythm, before adding:
“I am dizzy with fear, there is no ground beneath me; it is maddening, endless. And sad,” he recalls. “There’s something sad about the rhythm. And I can’t stop it. I can not sleep. It was as if an alarm had been set off inside me and no one was turning it off.”
Washington noted that while she doesn’t have panic attacks “every night,” she is “nervous about the possibility” even though her parents don’t fight. He explained that he “tried everything to avoid” the “sound leaking” from his body, including reading poetry and singing.
Despite doing “anything I could think of to turn off my brain,” a panic attack “would attack my fascia, then work outward through my muscles and tendons.” However, the only thing that helped was the exhaustion that overcame the “rhythm, lulling me into a dream state beyond my fear.”

“I would fight the haunting rhythm as it rose within me, often having to contend with my parents fighting in the next room. If my internal rhythm wins, I am tortured by the tempo of my own obsessive brain; if my parents’ argument wins, I’m stuck with fear,” said the “Save the Last Dance” star again.
Washington’s “Thicker Than Water” is set for release on September 26.
