Kevin Costner, Christine Baumgartner Headed Back To Court To Officially End Divorce After Settlement

Kevin Costner and his estranged wife, Christine Baumgartner, still have some unfinished business related to the dissolution of their marriage.

The two, who had been married for 18 years, separated in May and had been at odds over what Baumgartner wanted as a settlement.

The former couple eventually reached a settlement but returned to court on Wednesday for a previously scheduled session. It is not clear what the settlement entails. However, reports state that Baumgartner will receive a larger amount than what was contained in the prenuptial agreement.

As reported by Daily Mail, Costner and his soon-to-be ex-wife will appear in court on Wednesday for their ongoing divorce proceedings. A court session is set to determine whether Baumgartner, 49, will receive $855,000 to cover legal expenses.

However, things changed when the couple reached an “amicable” settlement a day before the court date. Now, the purpose of their court meetings may have shifted to formal arrangements where judges review and potentially approve settlement terms.

Per TMZ, Baumgartner is now set to receive more than what was agreed to in her prenuptial agreement with Costner. He will be paid an initial lump sum of $1.5 million and a one-year mortgage payment on the home of a maximum of $1 million if the prenuptial agreement is upheld.

As for why Baumgartner ended up settling, a close friend said he did so because he “would have risked losing everything.”

“Christine really has no choice but to be content because Kevin has all the power. If he continues to fight, he will risk losing everything,” the source said.

The insider shared that while Baumgartner didn’t get everything he wanted, he was satisfied that it saved the kids from a difficult court battle. They also mentioned that Baumgartner never really wanted to go through the court process to settle his divorce from Costner.

The whole legal ordeal has been emotionally challenging for Baumgartner, so he’s relieved it’s finally over.

The source added, “It’s been a living nightmare, and now she just wants to move on and start fresh and start making her new house a home.”

During the divorce battle, some of the sore points were who would pay the attorney’s fees, how much child support Baumgartner would have to receive, and whether he would get spousal support.

In one of the court sessions, Costner’s lawyer, Laura Wasser, argued that her client was ready to find a middle ground, but that Baumgartner’s demands were “unrealistic and frankly outrageous.”

The lawyer also pointed out that they were initially set for a settlement conference, but instead Baumgartner insisted on hearing full testimony.

Wasser said in court, “Christine failed to inform the court that her settlement position throughout June, July and August was wildly unrealistic and frankly outrageous, Kevin did not expect her to be more settlement oriented at VSC [voluntary settlement conference].”

Although the exact date of their separation was not made public until May, court records later confirmed that Baumgartner officially recognized April 11 as their separation date.

In her documents, she stated that the reason for their separation was “irreconcilable differences” and requested joint custody of their children, Cayden, Hayes, and Grace.

Meanwhile, Costner released a response to his filing, also asking for joint custody of their children and stating that his estranged wife signed a prenuptial agreement at the beginning of their marriage.

At the time, a representative for the “Yellowstone” actor released a statement clarifying that Costner and Baumgartner had separated after 18 years of marriage.

“It is with great sadness that circumstances beyond his control have occurred that have forced Mr. Costner to participate in the dissolution of marriage,” the statement said, per Daily Mail.

“We ask that her, Christine and their children’s privacy be respected as they navigate this difficult time.”
