Kevin Costner Finally Weighs In On His ‘Yellowstone’ Role And Potential Return

Kevin Costner has opened up about his desire to return to the set of “Yellowstone” to finish his role as the show enters its final episode.

Costner played John Dutton in the series but left abruptly after becoming embroiled in a three-way feud involving his camp, show producer Taylor Sheridan, and the Paramount Network.

At the time, the actor claimed that the show owed him $12 million for the unfilmed second half after Paramount “walked away” from negotiations.

During his appearance Tuesday at CinemaCon to promote his upcoming film “Horizon: An American Saga,” Costner weighed in on the prospect of returning to the popular Paramount Network drama after his departure.

It comes after he quit filming following the release of the first half of the fifth season when tensions rose between him and co-creator Taylor Sheridan, forcing the show to be shelved.

The “Draft Day” actor has now revealed that he would “love” to reprise his role as John Dutton for the second half and final season of the show, which is expected to drop in November.

“I’d love to be able to do it, but we can’t,” said Costner, per Entertainment Tonight. “…I think I’ll make seven [seasons] but now it’s five o’clock. So how does it work — I hope it does — but they have a lot of different plans going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will come back to me. If it happens and I feel very comfortable with it [it]I want to do it.”

The 69-year-old actor went further to share how he likes his character on the show to end.

“[Dutton] need to be proactive in what happens, and I have my own fantasy how [the character’s final arc] maybe,” Costner said.

He added, “But that’s Taylor’s thing. I said as much to him a while ago. I have thoughts [about] how it could happen, but we’ll just have to see.”

The Academy Award winner went on to state that there was “no script written” for the second part of season 5 and that “they still hadn’t finished” the first part of the season at the time. They tried “pay or play,” but it didn’t work, and he was set to receive $12 million for each part of season 5.

Costner stated that he wanted to return for the sixth season of the Western series, but “I can’t help them anymore. We tried to negotiate, they offered me less money than the previous season, there were problems with the creative…”

At the time, speculation was rife about the cause of Costner’s marriage to Baumgartner, with some suggesting his time away from home filming “Yellowstone” and working on his new movie was to blame for their divorce.

As the estranged couple processed their divorce in court, Baumgartner claimed that he “didn’t push” her to leave the show before their split.

In court documents, she said that the actress’ “public attacks on me were harmful to our family” and that she thought “they were intended to pressure me to move without a temporary child support agreement.”

“I have avoided going public about the reasons for our divorce. I have done this to protect our family’s privacy. I did not pressure Kevin to leave the Yellowstone show,” she added.

Baumgartner filed to end their 18-year marriage in May of last year, the actor’s rep said Many people that “circumstances beyond his control have occurred” between them.
