Kevin Costner & Christine Baumgartner’s divorce battle heats up as the “Yellowstone” actor makes a bold claim to shift the financial burden of his legal fees to his estranged wife.
The couple, who share three children, announced their separation in 2023 after nearly two decades of marriage. While divorce is no stranger to the glitz and glamor of Hollywood, this particular case continues to take an interesting turn as the couple continues to make several demands on each other.
Kevin Costner Hits Christine Baumgartner With Legal Fee Bill
The 68-year-old is demanding that his ex-partner bear the burden of his hefty legal fees of $99,225 to litigate their prenup. Their prenuptial agreement, which addresses legal representation in the event of a breach, stipulates that:
“the powerful party … is entitled … to be reimbursed by the powerless party for all costs and expenses incurred by him.”
The three-time Golden Globe Award winner’s filing also “respectfully reminded” the court of the $1.5 million she had set aside in a bank account for the 49-year-old in accordance with their agreement. However, Baumgartner has expressed his reluctance to use these funds, fearing that it could affect his legal position in their ongoing divorce proceedings.

The former handbag designer and her legal team previously asked the “Yellowstone” star for an additional $350,000 in attorney fees and $150,000 in forensic costs. This request is driven by a significant difference in resources between the two parties.
Furthermore, his filing directly addresses Costner’s insistence that he should be responsible for covering his legal fees. Criticizing her position, it pointed out that her ex-husband claimed the prenuptial agreement (PMA) was valid and rejected any evidence challenging its validity. Their response to this is a poignant analogy, stating that the position is akin to “whistling past a graveyard” in legal terms.
Baumgartner’s filing also argued, “Kevin’s focus on PMA at this point is premature and completely irrelevant to Christine’s RFO for child support and fees….” They pointed out that the award-winning actor’s financial complexities and his efforts to minimize his obligations to their children would result in significant fees and costs.
However, the request for legal fees is just the latest development in the estranged couple’s divorce battle. Earlier, The Blast reported that the mother of three expressed her willingness to leave their luxury home.
However, the entrepreneur made it clear that he had one important condition: he was looking for assurances that his financial stability would not be affected by his impending divorce from the “Guardian of the Guard” star.
According to the filing, Baumgartner has agreed to leave the property by August 31 of this year, allowing him 50 days to find a new home to get comfortable. Notably, this extended time frame exceeds the original provision in their prenuptial agreement, which initially required that he depart within 30 days of the May 1 divorce filing.

In taking legal action against the TV personality, Baumgartner claimed that his behavior throughout their divorce proceedings showed a “lack of maturity.”
According to documents obtained by The Blast, he believes that Costner’s proposed monthly support amount of $51,000, is well below the standard expected given his substantial income.
Continuing her fight against the “Man of Steel” star, she stated, “I can’t provide housing and care for the kids anywhere close to their normal lifestyle on $51,000/mo. Kevin plans to pay child support. ”
She emphasized that this amount is completely inadequate to support their three teenage children, especially considering Costner’s claimed net worth of $215,000,000.
The owner of “Cat Bag Couture” claims that during their breakup, the “For Love of the Game” star canceled visits to see their children at their shared home due to a disagreement over the “master bedroom.” According to his account:
“There was no reason to have any confrontation about the master bedroom. We had a very peaceful interaction during his last trip home in May, and during that visit, I gave Kevin the bedroom.”
She also expressed her confusion over the unnecessary confrontation surrounding the issue, stating, “Kevin’s actions on this issue reflect a lack of maturity and willingness to work well together as co-parents.”
