Who exactly is Kevin Gates?
The 37-year-old rapper was born Kevin Jerome Gilyard in New Orleans, Louisiana. He had a hard life and was imprisoned at the age of 13 for “riding about” in a stolen car as a “passenger.” He started his career as a musician in 2007 when he signed with local label Dead Game Records. He recorded two mixtapes under them but was arrested in 2008, halting his career. While incarcerated, Gates claimed to have received a master’s degree in psychology. For good behavior, he was released in 2011.
After his incarceration, he released The Luca Brasi Story, a mixtape to critical acclaim, and he soon signed with Atlantic Records. Really Really, 2 Phones and Broken Love are his most famous songs. Kevin Gates married his fiancée Dreka Haynes in 2015, and the couple has two children. The singer has yet to respond to the news.
