Kim Tae-ri Apologizes After She Faced Backlash Over Her Vlog Subtitles Controversy

Kim Tae-ri issued a personal apology on her Instagram account on May 23, 2023, in response to the current controversy over the subtitles for her vlogs. The message, written in Korean and English, was shared some time after the actress’ agency released a statement about it.

The uproar arose the day before when the Twenty-Five, Twenty-One actor published a picture from the third episode of his vlog and said that English subtitles had finally been added, after almost a year of waiting. He also announced the launch of a volunteer initiative where fans from around the world can help him subtitle 20-30 minute episodes in their own language.

Kim Tae-ri and her agency, Management Mmm, were immediately punished for asking for free work without offering any remuneration. As the backlash mounted, the agency issued a statement explaining its objectives. When that failed to satisfy netizens, the actress issued an apology to clarify her point of view. Kim Tae-ri said that he was the one who added the English subtitles and thought of making the project available to fans from all over the world. He said that he should have approached supporters more carefully.

Kim Tae-ri personally apologized to the volunteers and issued a public statement regarding his subtitle incident.

Kim Tae-ri posted on her Instagram account on May 22 to inform followers about the inclusion of English subtitles to the third episode of her vlog, which was posted a year ago on YouTube. He also hopes to please them by revealing that episode four will be released soon and introducing a volunteer-based subtitling effort. Unfortunately, that strategy failed. The actor had included a Google form link in a now-deleted Instagram post, asking fans from different countries to translate his vlog to make it more accessible. However, netizens were quick to chastise him for “talent donation,” sometimes known as free labor.

It took a lot of effort to translate the almost half hour video. It is a legitimate profession, with the addition of producing subtitles, which many believe should be awarded money or some special product.

“I shouldn’t approach my fans as if I’m asking for a talent donation.” It was an obvious mistake, and I’m sorry I didn’t realize it. I apologize to everyone who felt uncomfortable with my rash thoughts and actions.”

The actor also revealed that he personally sent an apology to followers who expressed an interest in helping.

“I understand that an honest apology is more important than anything else.” I apologize in writing to everyone who volunteered to help with the translation.”
