King Charles III Unveils Plans To Honor Late Father, Prince Philip, At Coronation Ceremony

King Charles III has some well-thought-out plans in store for his late father, Prince Philip, at his upcoming coronation in May this year.

The King intended to pay tribute to the late, who died in April 2021 at the age of 99, by recognizing his homeland, Greece, with a beautiful ballad in the program of the event.

King Charles Will Honor His Father With Greek Orthodox Music At His Coronation

Buckingham Palace has revealed that King Charles is set to include a tribute to his late father in the form of music to be played at Westminster Abbey during his coronation. He “personally” requested a composition honoring Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who was born in Greece and baptized in the Greek Orthodox church.

In a statement reported by PEOPLE, the palace said, “His Majesty the King has personally commissioned new music and shaped and selected the musical program for the Service. At the request of His Royal Highness, in honor of his late father, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Greek Orthodox music will also be featured in the Service performed by the Byzantine Chant Ensemble.”

The late Royal had an influential role in his wife’s Coronation in 1953, where he arranged an “epic investiture” as supervisor of the Coronation Committee and was the first person to honor her as Queen after the Archbishop of Canterbury. As previously reported, Buckingham Palace mentioned that the upcoming ceremony, crowning King Charles and Queen Camilla, will “reflect the role of the monarch today and look to the future while being rooted in tradition and pageantry.”

The King has therefore commissioned twelve new pieces of music to be performed at the Coronation at Westminster Abbey, choosing artists from across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. The new composition features the Coronation Song by Andrew Lloyd Webber, credited for his work on “Cats,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” and “Evita,” among others.

Lloyd expressed his gratitude in a statement for being honored with a request to compose a new song for the coronation ceremony, which he hoped would reflect “the joyous occasion.” The Coronation Service will be performed by The Choir of His Majesty’s Chapel Royal, St. James Palace, alongside talent from the Chapel Choir of Methodist College, Belfast, and Truro Cathedral Choir.

In addition, the Ascension Choir and The King’s Scholars of Westminster School will perform, making up the line-up, which has yet to be announced. Music will play a central role throughout the two-day event, starting with the official ceremony at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6, and leading up to the Coronation Concert the following day, which will be broadcast live from Windsor Castle.

According to Buckingham Palace, a “world-class orchestra and dancers” will perform alongside global music stars and modern artists, apparently excluding Ed Sheeran and Adele, much to the King’s dismay. According to reports, King Charles initially suggested a few stars he wanted to perform at his coronation, and at the top of the list were Sheeran and the “Hello” singer.

Unfortunately, both singers declined the invitation. The “Photograph” singer already had plans to perform in Texas the day before the Coronation concert, while Adele gave no reason. Additionally, it is reported that he does not have a clash show scheduled for May 7th, nor is he booked for a concert after March 25th.

While Adele and Sheeran won’t be attending the momentous occasion, people can expect performances from Lionel Richie, the Spice Girls, and even Harry Styles based on speculation.

The Royal Family may reportedly settle with estranged Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, before the King’s coronation, although it may not be long.

Jonathan Sacerdoti, a journalist who specializes in royal affairs, revealed it in an interview. Sacerdoti spoke of his suspicions that efforts were being made for reconciliation to prevent family tensions from overshadowing the events of such an important period.

He went on to explain, “I think it will be very difficult for them as a family and more broadly for the country and institutions to forgive what happened.”

As fans know, since Harry and Markle stepped down as royals in 2020, they have been candid about their experiences, openly criticizing the British monarchy, as witnessed in the Netflix documentary and Harry’s book “Spare.”
