King Charles prepares to bring ‘more changes’ to ‘slimmed down’ royal family, ex-butler says

King Charles is seeking to implement “more changes” to the royal family as his mission to slim down and modernize the monarchy reaches new heights, his former royal butler has claimed.

Grant Harrold, who worked for the king for seven years when he was Prince of Wales, claimed that Charles would put his signature “overturning” the tradition implemented by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

“It’s interesting, she has followed in Queen Elizabeth’s footsteps and done the same thing she does with all official engagements,” Harrold said.

“She stopped touring abroad a few years ago so Charles can take it easy but she has added a twist.”

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has expressed his desire for a lean monarchy since assuming the throne last September — and he also wants to make some changes to some aspects of his royal residence.

“There’s been a lot of change in the garden, King Charles was a famous gardener and loved his garden,” Harrold said.

“I think there will be changes coming, a prime example is the balcony at Trooping the Color earlier this year,” he explained. “If you look from the Queen’s time it looks like Piccadilly Circus, if you look at it now it looks like something after Armageddon, it’s completely different.”

“He has carefully and dignifiedly reduced the monarchy to what is classified as a core family and that will only become smaller when his royal cousins die.”

“They’re not going to pick people to intervene, I think it’s going to be a lean monarchy like he wants,” added Harrold, on behalf of Slingo.

Although the King intends to trim the monarchy’s fat, his sister Princess Anne has previously said she does not think it is a good idea.

“I think ‘slim’ was said on a day when there were a few more people around to make that seem like a reasonable comment,” he said in May. “That doesn’t sound like a good idea from where I’m standing… I’m not sure what else we can do.”

Anne suggested that the royal family had been sufficiently adjusted after Prince Harry, Meghan Markle stepped down as a senior working member of the family.
