Kirstie Alley’s death at the age of 71 came as a shock to her friends and family, as she had been battling colon cancer for a while before she died. Tributes from co-stars and friends have flooded social media, as fans remember him for his various roles, from “Star Trek II,” to “Cheers” to his film with John Travolta, “Look Who’s Talking.”

But what many remember him for, is his wildly fluctuating weight and how he treated weight loss as an athlete, and how he always stayed upfront about the same. This remembers Kirstie Alley…

Kirstie Alley’s Memorable Oprah Moments, In a Bikini

Kirstie Alley remains open about her weight loss, and gain, journeyMEGA

Alley’s weight skyrocketed around the 50s, with what she called “man trouble” and the media latched onto it, in a not-so-pleasant way.

In fact, in November 2004, Alley told Oprah about her weight problems and how she was the target of paparazzi. As his personal battle with the pound became public, Alley decided to be an open book about it. She told Oprah, “Honestly, I had no idea how fat I was. Thanks to the tabloids I went, ‘Damn, girl, you’re fat!’”

She admits that at her heaviest, she weighed 230 pounds and when the media splashed her fat-looking face on the front pages, she decided to do something about it. Alley quit smoking and joined the Jenny Craig weight loss program, becoming their spokesperson for a week. She continued to keep Oprah updated and finally, in 2006, she made a big revelation, appearing in a bikini on Oprah, and looking curvy but much thinner than before.

Kirstie Alley Makes A Fortune By Losing Weight Too

On Monday night, the Alley family took to Instagram to inform friends and family that the actress had passed away, writing, “We are saddened to inform you that our amazing, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, recently- just discovered. He was surrounded by his immediate family and fought with great strength, leaving us with the certainty of endless joy in life and whatever adventures lie ahead.”

Although she was tied to Jenny Craig for a long time, in 2011 when Alley came “Dancing With the Stars”, she created her weight loss program, Organic Liaison. She and dance partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy finished second on that season of “DWTS,” and Alley credits her weight loss during that time to her performance and program.

At the time, she wrote, “NO surgery, NO flippin’ lasers, NO barfing, NO starvation … Oh my gosh … my products, organic food, dancing.”

Alley claimed that he lost 100 pounds with his own weight loss system but in 2012 he was sued for false advertising. He settled a class-action lawsuit by removing the “proven product” labeling from the packaging.

Previously, she had also become an author, writing about her weight loss struggles in a book, “How To Lose Your Ass and Get Your Life Back: The Reluctant Confessions of a Superstar” in 2005. In it, she basically wrote about living life as an overweight star in a thin-obsessed world,

Meanwhile, here’s Jenny Craig’s praise for Alley.

Fans Pay Tribute To ‘Fat Actor’

Alley is nothing if not upfront about her weight and ups and downs, and is more than happy to capitalize on the same, starring in the sitcom, “Fat Actor.”

The show focuses on a fictionalized version of Alley, a formerly thin Hollywood starlet who has gained weight and is on a weight loss journey. Much of the show’s script and even one line came close to being based on Alley’s real-life experiences as an overweight Tinseltown star and her struggles with weight loss. The show also stars John Travolta, who has given a rather emotional eulogy for his friend and also stars his late wife, Kelly Preston.

Fans remember him for his role in “Fat Actor”, and with good reason:

She may have turned into a real nut bag by the end of her life, much to the chagrin of many of us, but drop dead gorgeous is still one of my favorite movies and she was funny in it. Also this scene from Fat Actor still bothers me. pic.twitter.com/25CEtE4rSM
