Kmart pulls ‘Merry Ham-Mas’ bags in Australia over fears looks like a tribute to Hamas: ‘We got it wrong’

A Kmart store in Australia has pulled a Christmas-themed bag of ham emblazoned with “Merry Ham-Mas” – after it sparked outrage for resembling terrorist group Hamas.

The festive drawstring bag, which featured holiday decorations and was meant to keep ham in the fridge, first drew the ire of the Australian Jewish Association.

“K-MART STUFF-UP! Check out the special Christmas bags now available through Kmart online. Yes, it’s true!!” the group writes on Xwhere it posted an image of a $4 terrorizing tote.

“While this is potentially funny (the AJA committee has thrown in some non-PC jokes) it really doesn’t look good. We suspect some product managers may cause the company embarrassment,” he said.

“So we politely wrote to Wesfarmers corporate suggesting the product be recalled,” added AJA.

Kmart later apologized for the reprehensible mistake.

“We made a mistake on this occasion, and we apologize unreservedly,” a company representative told Politico Thursday.

“When designing this product we obviously did not think about all the implications and the product has been removed from sale,” the spokesperson added.

In an interview with The West Australian, AJA president David Adler praised Kmart for pulling the product.

“It is not a normal time, there are people who will distort things and will disturb the Jewish community,” he told the outlet.

“Of course, there are bigger issues to deal with, dealing with real terrorism is important, but one of the other things we deal with is propaganda,”? Adler said.

“I want to give credit to Kmart management because they acted quickly,” he added.

Christmas ham is a staple of holiday traditions in Australia, where it is often served cold.
