Benson went undefeated (14-0 with a 1.40 ERA) during his junior year at University, striking out 178 batters in 142 innings pitched. He later guided the Tigers to the NCAA tournament. Benson was voted the Player of the Year in College Baseball. He was named Baseball America Player of the Year and ACC Player of the Year as a Tiger. Furthermore, he left Clemson before getting his diploma. In terms of his professional career, Benson was selected first overall in the 1996 Major League Baseball Draft.
