“Items reflects the way we treat women. Media through its reach and impact has changed our ideas about sex, gender and its power structure, setting strange physical standards for us to follow. We really wanted to tell this story through the character of Sapna Shetty (written by Deepti Kachare), an unskilled dancer who was chosen by the filmmaker to be the heroine of his film. He eventually became a superstar in the B-grade film industry. Over the years, he exposed his body for performances and gradually began to believe that he was a great actor and his fans loved his acting skills. This is so ingrained in Sapna that when she makes a comeback after a setback, she declares that her comeback is no less than Amitabh Bachchan.”
When asked about using the bed as a metaphor in the drama ‘Item,’ he said,
In the play, the camera, the plot, the story and its subtext, dim lights, dirty props, shiny chairs, men and women, all revolve around the bed. It becomes the main character. In the B-grade film industry, there is hardly any logical plot and dialogue with the ultimate goal being to show a man and a woman in bed.”
On 27 October 2018, his play, ‘Item,’ was premiered at the Old World Theater Festival held at India Habitat Center in New Delhi.
