Kumar Gaurav was born on 11 July 1960 in Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh). His father Rajendra Kumar is a famous movie star of Indian cinema. After the partition of India, his family moved to India from Pakistan. In India, Rajendra Kumar decided to work in the film industry, and after working as an assistant director with famous producers and directors Harnam Singh Rawail for 5 years, he moved in the field of acting and gave several superhit films to Indian cinema.

Kumar’s nickname is Bunty. He did schooling from Bishop Cotton School in Shimla. After his education, he was launched in the film industry by his father Rajendra Kumar with the film Love Story. During the early days of his career, some of his films were huge hits at the Indian box office. In 1986, he was also nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his film ‘Janam.’
After that, despite working hard, he did not manage to build a career in Bollywood, because in the 1990s, his maximum films faced continuous failure one after another.
But, later, films like Kaante in 2002 and Guiana 1838 in 2004, helped him to create a unique position in the world of cinema.

Gaurav’s real name is Manoj Tuli. He belongs to a Punjabi Khatri family as his grandfather had a textile business in Karachi, Sindh (now in Pakistan) and grandfather was a successful soldier. At the time of partition, his family left all their land and property in Pakistan and moved to India.

After coming to Mumbai, Kumar’s father Rajendra Kumar Tuli (20 July 1929 – 12 July 1999), tried his luck in the Hindi film industry and worked as an assistant director with famous producers and directors Harnam Singh Rawail for five years. In 1955, a famous publisher Devendra Goel give him a break in his film’Vachan,’ which was successful, and was nominated for the annual ‘Filmfare Awards.’ Later, he continued his career as an actor in the Indian film industry. Rajendra Kumar also accepted Padma Shri in 1969.
Gaurav’s mother Shukla is the sister of famous director OP Ralhan. Kumar Gaurav has two younger sisters Dimple and Kajal.
During the making of the film ‘Kisah Cinta’, Kumar got close to a famous actor Vijayta Pandit. But due to disagreements and tensions between the families of the two stars, their relationship ended.

Career
In 1981, Kumar’s father Rajendra Kumar launched him in the film ‘Kisah Cinta,’ which proved to be a blockbuster. In 1982, the next film Teri Kasam with actress Poonam Dhillon also managed to get out. In the same year, he acted as Dev Kumar Verma opposite Rati Agnihotri or Maya in the film ‘Star,‘ which did not do well at the box office, but the music became popular.

Kumar Gaurav’s First Film ‘Love Story’
In 1985, he worked in the television film ‘Janam’ directed Mahesh Bhatt. His performance in this film is considered to be one of the best performances of his career. Next year in 1986, Mahesh Bhatt once again took it with his brother-in-law Sanjay Dutt in the movie Naam. Although this film earned good profits and popularity but his career could not be developed further as all the following films failed at the Indian box office.
In 1993, his father tried to revive his career by producing a film Phool, where he decided to cast the then top heroine Madhuri Dixit opposite Kumar. In it, Rajendra Kumar and Sunil Dutt work in supporting roles with Gaurav. Unfortunately, this film also could not help him achieve success in the Indian film Industry.

Later, he took a break from acting and later; from 1996 to 1999, signed several films. During this time, he also appeared in several TV series such as Sikandar and Chocolate in 1999.
In 2000, he appeared as a director belonging to Mazhar Khan movie Gang. Later, in 2002, Manoj acted in the film Kaante directed by Sanjay Gupta. It is a remake of a Hollywood movie Reservoir Dogs (1992). This movie hit sky high and became the third highest grossing film of 2002.

In 2004, he worked on his first American film, Guiana 1838, which proved to be a hit at the North American box office. It also counts in the top 25 highest screen average chart of all time. In 2006, Manoj also acted in the silent film My Daddy Strongest.
