HAMBURG, New York – A New York restaurant on the shores of Lake Erie has reopened after a lake-effect snowstorm covered the business in a “layer of ice castles.”
Hoak’s Lakeshore restaurant in Hamburg, New York, a suburb of Buffalo, closed Sunday amid travel bans during the massive winter storm.
Areas in western New York saw more than 2 feet of snow, including 41.3 inches in Hamburg.
Wind and snow covered businesses on the northeast shore of Lake Erie with large ice and thick layers of ice accretion.
The restaurant wrote on Instagram it remained closed on Sunday after “getting some ice castle coating.” Photos show ice covering business fences and feet of ice falling from roofs.
On Monday, the ice castle’s full transformation was complete with ice from almost every surface of the building. In a video shared by Richard Hulburd on X, formerly known as Twitter, he said he felt like he “walked into the movie ‘Frozen.'”

However, despite the newly added icy exterior, the business was open to customers on Monday.
“Our ice castle today from our first storm of 2024,” the restaurant wrote. “We’re open!”
This isn’t the first local staple “ice castle” experience.
In December 2022, FOX Weather Correspondent Max Gorden was in Hamburg when a huge wave covered Hoak’s Restaurant with a layer of ice and damaged nearby businesses.
