Gary Bartz, a saxophonist, was an early instructor who exposed him to practice approaches such as Hyacinthe Klosé’s 25 Daily Etudes. He exposed him to jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and the music of Jackie McLean. He studied with Billy Harper, Reggie Workman, Buster Williams, Joe Chambers, and Gary Bartz at the New School University.
Benjamin’s first work was with trumpeter Clark Terry in the Young Titans of Jazz ensemble, which he founded. He has performed with Anita Baker, Count Basie Orchestra, Harry Belafonte, Blitz the Ambassador, Joanne Brackeen, Keyshia Cole, Duke Ellington Orchestra, Corte Ellis, Kool & the Gang, Macy Grey, Jimmy Heath, Vincent Herring, Bertha Hope, Ulysses Owens Jr., Charlie Persip, The Roots, Santigold, Charles Tolliver, Charenee Wade, Stevie Wonder, Gregory Porter and Craig Robinson’s Nasty Delicious Band. Benjamin’s band performed songs from their first album, Retox. Krystle Warren, Amp Fiddler, Maya Azucena, Melanie Charles, ChinahBlac, and Mavis Swann Poole all appear on the album. Ben Kane co-produced the album.
