Career
Larry was a standout for the Tar Heels in the early 1960s, but he was considered too short to play in the NBA. He began his career after college with the Akron Wingfoots of the NABL, where he played for two years (1964-1965).
He also guided the Wingfoots to the AAU National Championship in 1964. Later, he was selected for the 1964 Team USA gold medal winning Summer Olympics team.
After serving as an assistant coach at North Carolina for a short time, the player joined the fledgling American Basketball Association, where he played for the Oakland Oaks, New Orleans Buccaneers, Washington Caps, Virginia Squires, and Denver Rockets.
He was awarded the ABA’s first All-Star Game MVP in 1968, and he was also named to the All-ABA Second Team that year. During his first three seasons in the league, he led the league in assists per game.
