Las Vegas teenagers accused of beating 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis to death in an alley near their high school claimed self-defense, saying at a court hearing Thursday that the boy threw the first punch.
Four of the nine teenagers charged with Lewis’ murder appeared before Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Nadia Woods but did not receive bail as expected, with Woods instead saying he would issue a written bond order for each defendant next week, local CBS affiliate station KLAS reported .
The four teenagers — Damien Hernandez, 17, Gianni Robinson, 17, Dontral Beaver, 16, and Treavion Randolph, 16 — appeared in handcuffs and are being tried as adults for second-degree murder after they allegedly hit and stomped on Lewis’s head on Nov. 1 outside of Rancho High School.
Lewis died of his injuries a week later.
Their defense attorneys argued that the teenagers should not have received the $250,000 blanket bond per defendant requested by the government because some were more involved in Lewis’ beating than others and the dollar figure should reflect that, according to local stations.
They also said their client was acting in self-defense when Lewis started the fight and his friend had a knife, as The Post previously reported.

As Lewis’ mother sat in tears in the courtroom, prosecutors acknowledged that Lewis threw the first punch, but said it still did not warrant the horrific beating he suffered, KLAS reported.
Five of the other teenagers arrested for Lewis’ murder were younger and the government decided whether to try them as adults or juveniles. The 10th “interested person” remains free.
