Late “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek will be honored with a pancreatic cancer research foundation in his name.
Next week marks the third anniversary of the late game show host’s death from pancreatic cancer, but his widow, Jean Trebek, “Jeopardy!” current. co-host Ken Jennings, and the Stand Up To Cancer research foundation want to make sure that, although Alex may be gone, his legacy will not be forgotten.
Late ‘Jeopardy!’ Host Alex Trebek To Be Honored On Third Anniversary Of His Death
On November 8, 2020, Alex Trebek died at his home in Los Angeles, California, from pancreatic cancer. He once hosted “Jeopardy!” for 37 seasons, from its revival in 1984 to its demise in 2020.
On Wednesday, Stand Up To Cancer and Jean Trebek announced the creation of the Alex Trebek fund, which will support extensive research into pancreatic cancer treatments and provide resources for current patients and their families. Jean Trebek and Barbara Hanania’s estate have already donated more than $1 million to the fund, which aims to fight pancreatic cancer, which has the highest death rate of all major cancers.
“Alex knows that knowledge equals power. He is a man who loves to know things and remains very curious,” Jean Trebek said in a statement. “Since Alex is about the right answer, I think it is very appropriate that this fund be established in his name. It’s a way for the community that loves him to put resources directly into the hands of scientists working tirelessly to fight a disease shrouded in so many unknowns.”

In addition to the fund announcement, Stand Up To Cancer also created a video announcement featuring current host Ken Jennings as well as Jean Trebek and her daughter, Emily Trebek. In the video, Ken says, “Jeopardy was always big for me as a kid, so Alex was a huge inspiration for me. He created this place, this space where it’s safe to be a smart person,” He continued by saying, ” She was so smart, so graceful, so perfect for the role, that we all thought the job was easy. And no, hosting Jeopardy was very difficult.”
Emily Trebek asked “Jeopardy!” funds to contribute to the fund to eradicate the cancer that claimed his father’s life. “I hope all the fans and the Jeopardy community can really lean in and show support for this,” he said in the video. “I think they showed great support to my father when he was undergoing cancer treatment. I hope they rise with this great organization.”

As The Blast previously reported, in April 2023, Ken promoted the Purple Stride PanCAN Event to raise awareness for pancreas research. The annual event is organized by the non-profit organization Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, better known as PanCAN. Founded in 1999, the non-profit organization funds research, provides support and supports federal research for those affected by pancreatic cancer.
In August 2023, “Jeopardy! The Greatest Tournament Winner of All Time” spoke to the Last on the Left Podcast to describe his last conversation with Alex Trebek.
“I finally talked to him the night before the day he died, about guest hosting for him,” Ken said on the podcast, admitting that they “don’t know” how long it will be until Alex dies.
“We really don’t know. We thought, “Oh, he’s going to get better, he’s going to bounce back, he’s going to host again.” I’ll just fill it in,” Ken reminded. “You know, he gave me the impression he always does, which is that he doesn’t want to be the center of attention on Jeopardy!”
“He was never announced as a Jeopardy star! – he always hosts Jeopardy! because he thinks the game itself and the contestants should be the stars,” he added.
