‘Laziest Citizen’ contest has people lying down for 20 days — and counting

No matter how lazy you are, you definitely look very productive compared to these “competitors”.

Seven competitors hope to earn the coveted title of “Laziest Citizen” in a bizarre annual competition in the northern Montenegrin resort town of Brezna.

The rest of the participants – who compete for the top prize of $ 1,070 (1,000 euros) – have been lying on the mat for 20 consecutive days and continue, and they are determined to continue even after breaking the record of 117 hours last year.

First-time contestant Filip Knezevic, 23, told Reuters he was confident he would be the one to take the win.

“We have everything we need here, the company is great, time flies,” he said.

Simply sitting is a rule violation, as is standing, and will immediately eliminate the contestant, even though they get a 10-minute bathroom break every eight hours.

Participants are also allowed to eat, drink, read and use cell phones and laptops — but they must do so lying down.

“We all feel good, brilliant, no health problems, they spoil us, all we have to do is lie down,” 2021 champion Dubravka Aksic, 38, told the outlet.

The competition started 12 years ago to make fun of the myth that Montenegrins are lazy, Radonja Blagojevic, the organizer and owner of the resort explained.

The pool of participants started at 21, and Blagojevic said the remaining seven had been lying down for 463 hours at the time of the report.

Lazy stereotypes can be traced back to cultural references such as the Montenegrin Order, a humorous list of unofficial “orders” often sold as souvenirs that hyperbolize the Montenegrin lifestyle of leisure and relaxation, according to Montenegro.org.
