Neither rain nor snow nor hail nor hail could prevent this letter from being delivered — even if it took 80 years.
A letter written in 1943 to Louis and Lavena George of DeKalb, Illinois, was lost in the mail for decades — until a conscientious local postal worker made it his mission to ensure that it was finally delivered.
The unnamed hero of the post office tracks down the only two surviving embers of the George family — their two daughters — and gets the letter into their hands.
“Messages from the past, seeming to come out of nowhere,” George’s second daughter, Jeannette, told WIFR-TV News. That’s pretty unusual. Everyone said, ‘My God!’ You know? Shocked.”
The letter was first sent to a surviving daughter, Grace Salazar, who recently moved to Oregon and later shared it with her sister, the outlet said.
Their parents, who married in 1932, are dead – but the letter offers a glimpse into their lives.

It was written by the couple’s cousin who was mourning the loss of another daughter, Evelyn, who had Cystic Fibrosis.
“I got emotional about it,” Jeannette told WIFR. “I mean, losing a child is always horrible. It just put me in touch with the grief of my parents and the loss of my family before I was born.
“As I get older, I appreciate my extended family more and more, especially my nieces and nephews,” he added. “I just have more of a sense of continuity in life, family.”

DeKalb postal officials believe the delayed delivery was caused by the fact that the address the letter was sent to did not include the house number for the house on South Sixth Street.
