The actress turned heads when she revealed her looks to play Pamela Anderson in the FX miniseries, Pam & Tommy. She wears a platinum blonde wig, fake breasts, false teeth, and a forehead prosthetic. He also perfected an American accent that he couldn’t get rid of. James claims that when all was said and done and filming was over, his life was “broken”.
He says his life is now “shot for s**t” after portraying Anderson for so long. Part of the reason he’s so affected is because he uses a variation of method acting. “My differences with him are too extreme to go back and forth. So, I have to live in this middle man’s land like Lily/Pamela most of the time,” she shared with The Mirror.
It got to the point where she could take the wig off, sometimes she didn’t. Sometimes, he would “really slip into his voice.”

James shared that the process messed him up on many levels, calling it “a messy process.” The actress constantly has to remind herself that it’s okay to be tired and lethargic.
“You just have to be patient with yourself. It’s been so long and you feel so tired. Your nervous system is just like, shot to s—. I felt like a real wreck at the end.” Even though filming had finished and the show had aired, James felt like he couldn’t “shake” Anderson’s persona.
The process took 4 hours to complete so we can see why the actress would hesitate after a long day at work to want to get out of all that makeup and painstakingly remove the prosthetics.

The actress told Vanity Fair in the summer that she sometimes doesn’t fully recognize herself. “It’s insane to look in the mirror and really not see yourself anymore,” she explains. “It means I feel braver. I have fewer self-limitations about who I am and how I see myself.
While James struggled at first, now he feels like, “All the gloves are off. I can be anything,” he felt. Thankfully, all the hard work paid off. The series was praised for the role of drummer Tommy Lee played by Sebastian Stan and James’ performance as Anderson.

The show was nominated for ten Emmys with best actor for Stan and best supporting actor for Seth Rogan. The show focuses on the sex tape that broke the internet before the internet could be broken.
Unlike Kim Kardashian’s career which took off after her tape was released, Anderson’s career took a hit. While people were fascinated by her and Lee’s personal life, she didn’t really book roles anymore and the press was hard on her.
James admits that even though he hasn’t experienced it, he can see how this would undermine an actor’s career. He feels lucky to have portrayed the blonde icon.
