Los Angeles sheriff’s deputy fatally shot while sitting in his patrol car, days after getting engaged

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was killed when he was ambushed and shot in the head while sitting in his patrol car Saturday — four days after he got engaged, police said.

Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer, 30, was found unconscious outside the Palmdale sheriff’s station about 6 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said during a news conference late Saturday.

Clinkunbroomer was rushed nearly 10 miles to Antelope Valley Medical Center in Lancaster, where he was listed in critical condition before he succumbed to his injuries.

“I’m assuming at this point because he’s in uniform. That, to me, is sickening,” Luna said.

The gunman was still at large as of Sunday morning.

The senseless killing happened about four days after Clinkunbroomer had just gotten engaged to his girlfriend, the sheriff revealed.

“We’re going to catch the person who did this,” Luna said. “Every resource at the disposal of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will come after you.”

Law enforcement is seen cordoning off a large area outside the station, which is about 60 miles northeast of Downtown Los Angeles, with crime tape as they begin their investigation into the unprovoked killing of the deputy.

Dramatic video recorded by onlookers shows several patrol cars rushing deputies to the hospital.

Investigators are analyzing video that shows a car slowly pulling up behind the LASD car around the time of the shooting, Luna said.

Safety video reviewed by Fox News reporter Bill Melugin allegedly showed a black car pull up next to his deputy while he was in his squad car stopped at a red light near the station.

Moments later, the black car pulled out as the deputy minister’s patrol car slowly crept forward before stopping, Melugin shared.

Luna paused from reading her note during the press conference to urge the public to help identify the suspect who committed the cold-blooded murder.

“We really need your help. We need to get this man off the street. Man or man,” Luna asserted. “He is a public safety threat. He ambushed and killed one of our deputies.”

Clinkunbroomer spent about eight years with the department and moved to the Palmdale station in July 2018.

The officer has been a field training officer for almost two years.

He is a third generation LASD member, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

“Almost everyone works with their father,” Luna said of senior members of the LASD. “We are hurt because we lost someone. It always hurts.”

“They try to prepare you for this and no matter how much they do, it hurts.”
