The mother of Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales, who went on hunger strike to protest his suspension over the World Cup kiss scandal, has been hospitalized, a local priest said.
Ángeles Béjar was taken to Santa Ana Hospital in Motril Wednesday night after feeling tired and depressed, the cleric, who identified himself as “Father Antonio,” told reporters.
He was discharged at 11:30pm local time after being treated for leg swelling, vomiting and dizziness, Teledeporte reported.
Béjar has abandoned his hunger strike, the outlet added.
The dramatic hospitalization came 48 hours after Béjar and his sister barricaded themselves inside Motril’s Divine Shepherd church to protest the treatment of Rubalias following his World Cup kiss scandal.
The distraught mother was “on hunger strike and did not want to leave the church,” Rubialies’ cousin told Teledeporte at the time.

Béjar previously promised EFE that his protest would last “forever” until the “inhumane and bloodthirsty witch hunt my son is living through” ends.
Rubiales, 46, was suspended by FIFA for 90 days last week after he faced serious backlash for kissing Spain women’s soccer player Jennifer Hermoso after the team’s World Cup triumph on August 20.
Hermoso – who appeared to be taken aback during the strange interaction – later denied claims that the kiss was consensual and said she felt like “the victim of an invasion, an impulsive, sexist act, out of place and without any consent from me.”

More than 50 players from the Spanish women’s team also signed a petition vowing to boycott if Rubiales does not resign.
Rubiales, however, insists that the kiss was “just like I kissed my daughter once.”
The former Segunda División defender refused to resign over what he dismissed as a campaign of “social murder”, and threatened legal action against Hermoso and the Futpro union.

“There was no sexual abuse because there was consent on both sides, as the images prove,” Béjar insisted to EFE.
“My son is not capable of hurting anyone.”
The Supreme Sports Council is now looking for Rubiales to be ousted as president of the football federation.

“[Rubiales] has hurt a lot of people. He is a person with a very high self-esteem, he is a very arrogant person and I know he will be beaten,” Rubalies’ uncle, Juan, told Hablando Claro on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Hermoso’s friend, actor Itziar Castro, explained to Europa Press that the 33-year-old midfielder is “quite overwhelmed” by the controversy, and is coping with the media storm with his family.
