MK Stalin was born Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin on 1 March 1953 in Chennai (later Madras), Tamil Nadu, India to his second wife Dayalu Ammal M. Karunanidhi. He got his name after a Soviet revolutionary & Politician, Joseph Stalin, who died just four days after his birth. At a very young age, he started his political journey and was actively involved in many campaigns. He has struggled a lot and has faced many controversies during his political career. She has a strong relationship with her father and writes touching letters to him.

He was born into a prestigious political family of the Isai Vellalar community and was born to the late Indian politician M. Karunanidhi and Businessman Dayalu Ammal. Stalin had three brothers MK Muthu – an Actor, Singer, and Politician; MK Alagiri – a Politician; and MK Tamilarasu – Film Producer. He also has two younger sisters, Selvi Geetha Kovilam and Kanimozhi – a Politician. He is an Atheist and does not follow any religion.

Career

Stalin attended Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School, Chennai and completed his studies in History at Presidency College, Chennai. Although he came from a political family background, he started campaigning at the age of 14 in the 1967 elections. At the age of 20, he was elected to the DMK General Committee, which was headed by his late father M. Karunanidhi. In 1984, Stalin contested the Assembly elections from the Thousand Lights constituency of Tamil Nadu but he lost to KA Krishnaswamy of the AIADMK. In 1989, he was elected as an MLA from the Thousand Lights Constituency of Tamil Nadu. Apart from being a politician, he also acted in several Tamil films Ore Raththam (1987) and Makkal Aanayittal (1988) and in several TV serials such as Kurinji Malar and Suriya. He also produced the film Nambikkai Natchathram (1978).

In 1996, Stalin became the first directly elected mayor. He served as the thirty-seventh mayor of Chennai from 1996 to 2002. In 2001, he again elected to be the mayor of the city, however, the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa enacted the Tamil Nadu Municipalities (Amendment) Act in 2002 According to that law, a person cannot hold two elected positions in the government. In 2003, he served as DMK Deputy Secretary General. He served as the Minister of Municipal Administration and Rural Development from 2006 to 2011. In 2009, he was elected as the Treasurer of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). In the same year, he won the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) General Election.

In 2009, he was elected as the Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after his father’s health deteriorated due to spinal surgery Stalin served till 2011. Controversy

  • In 1975, Stalin was imprisoned under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) for protesting the Emergency.
  • In the late 1980s, there were rumors that Doordarshan newsreader Kendra Fathima (now a member of the AIADMK) was kidnapped by him. However, he denied this incident in 2018 by releasing a short audio message on WhatsApp on April 23. He said “At that time, I was acting in the television serial “Chithirapavai”. At that time, Doordarshan had this policy where its bulletin news reader could not broadcast news and serials simultaneously. So, I did not read news,” He also said “On days when we had night shift, Doordarshan would arrange a taxi to take us back home. So there was no scope for this abduction at all. I had explained this in an interview with Kumudham (a Tamil magazine) at that time. But these rumors is still happening, so I set the record straight that Stalin did not kidnap me,”
  • In 2001, he, along with his father M. Karunanidhi, Murasoli Maran, and TR Baalu ​​were arrested and charged in the Chennai Flyover Scam.
  • In 2015, Stalin, along with his wife Durga and his party cadre, visited the Sri Sowmya Narayana Perumal Thirukovil temple in Thirukoshtiyur. Although the DMK is an atheist party, it has created controversy. However, he later explained that he visited there only to see the ancient sculptures in the temple.
  • In 2016, he publicly blamed politician VK Sasikala for Jayalalithaa’s death.
  • In 2018, at one of the weddings, he criticized Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy for his proposal that the allocation of the Cauvery Water Management Authority should be discussed in Parliament. He said, “A day before assuming office as Chief Minister of Karnataka, Kumaraswamy visited Srirangam and worshiped at the temple. At that time, he said the people of both States will live as brothers and sisters.” In response to this statement, Stalin said, “Kumaraswamy needs god’s blessings in Tamil Nadu but he cares about the livelihood of Tamil people.”
  • After the arrest of V. Senthil Balaji by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in June 2023 in connection with the alleged cash-for-jobs controversy, the Governor of Tamil Nadu, RN Ravi, immediately terminated Balaji from the Council of Ministers. However, Chief Minister Stalin later chose to retain Balaji as a minister without portfolio. Stalin, while criticizing the Governor, insisted that he had no power to dismiss a minister, and vowed to pursue legal avenues to deal with the situation.
