MacBook Pro Model A2251: Is It Worth Buying In 2023?

MacBooks have established themselves as some of the most popular laptops on the market for a while now. They have some great features, are well designed and easy to use.

One of Apple’s most popular systems is the 13-inch Macbook Pro 2020 MWP42LL/A. Included with this device is an Intel Core i5 processor with a clock speed of 2.0 GHz, and during periods of heavy processing, this speed can be increased to 3.8 GHz.

Apple increased the storage options for this device, allowing customers to select up to 4TB of storage at the time of purchase, in addition to the new processors.

Despite having a lot to offer users of all kinds, is the Apple Macbook Pro A2251 still worth the money in 2023? So that you can make an informed decision, I will go over more information about the MWP42LL/A specifications.

Macbook Pro Model A2251: Features

Given all the power packed inside, the 2020 MacBook Pro’s battery life is truly impressive. An impressive 10 hours and 30 minutes at 150 nits of screen brightness is possible with the 58.2-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery that powers the MacBook Pro A2251.

To extend the battery life of its devices with smaller batteries, Apple has made numerous optimizations in its latest operating system. Comparatively, the 16-inch Macbook Pro devices have a 100-watt-hour battery to provide a similar amount of usage time with the larger screens.

A 2.0 GHz Intel Core i5 (I5-1038NG7) processor with support for Turbo Boost up to 3.8 GHz powers this MacBook Pro A2251, which ships with MacOS X 10.15.4 (19E2265). Just slightly slower than the XPS 13’s 19 frames per second, this laptop managed to hit 18 fps in the Civilization VI benchmark.

Portable Power Station Features

Although Apple A2251 lacks a dedicated GPU, it does have an integrated Intel Iris Plus Graphics card with 1.5 GB of VRAM for processing graphics.

The Iris Plus graphics on the 2020 MacBook Pro are great for photo and video editing, but don’t expect to play demanding games at high frame rates. For better gaming, you can consider Dell Alienware M15 R16 and Acer Predator Helios 500 17 AMD.

The impressive stereo separation on the opening strings of Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here caught my eye even though the MWP42LL/A is only a 13-inch laptop.

The audio quality of the MacBook Pro is still underrated. The two speakers that sit on either side of the keyboard produce loud, clear audio with a surprising amount of bass.

The only display type and resolution available for this Macbook Pro model A2251 is a 13.3″ widescreen Retina display with a high-resolution LED-backlit widescreen (25601600). It’s still one of the best options available for a 13-inch laptop.

Audio and display function

The display has a 500-nit peak brightness rating and True Tone technology, which adjusts the display’s white balance to the type of ambient light around the laptop.

Although there’s no 4K option on the MacBook A2251, the panel is bright and sharp, making it ideal for photo editing, video viewing, and office work. Text is sharp, colors are vibrant, and I especially like the True Tone feature.

The 13-inch screen size makes the Macbook Pro A2251 a substantial slab of a laptop that could be a big factor in your decision. Compared to its predecessor (3.02 pounds and 0.59 inches thick), it’s a bit thicker and heavier at 11.97 x 8.36 x 0.61 inches.

By contrast, the HP Specter x360 weighs 2.7 pounds and measures 12.1 x 7.7 x 0.7 inches, while the Dell XPS 13 weighs just 2.8 pounds and is much slimmer at 11.6 x 7.8 x 0.6 inches.

It’s the same old block of unibody aluminum, which feels and looks tough but lacks innovation. The “new” 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro feels like a step back after seeing the 16-inch MacBook Pro and how Apple shrunk the bezels. Particularly when compared to many Dell models, the top bezel is quite thick.

Since the pandemic broke out and most work meetings are now held virtually, a high-quality webcam has become an absolute must. The additional expense can be avoided by using a laptop with a good webcam.

The 720p webcams on both the MacBook Pro A2251 and the older model, which have similar camera quality, only provide passable video quality. While this is a common problem with almost all laptop cameras, video chats often look grainy indoors, even in well-lit spaces.

Apple should, in my opinion, update the MacBook Pro’s webcam at this point. For a price tag of $1,299 or more, a 720p resolution seems inadequate, and for Full HD video, I’d rather watch 1080p.

Although some users won’t be bothered by the average quality of the Macbook Pro A2251, if you want more clarity and detail, go for one of the additional webcams.

In an effort to appease people who type on their laptops all day, the Magic Keyboard does away with the extremely shallow keys of the previous Butterfly Keyboard design and adds travel distance and stability.

The 13-inch Macbook A2251 now has a Magic Keyboard, similar to those found on the 16-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, that uses scissor switches to achieve 1mm key travel.

There’s a significant difference here in how your hands and wrists feel as you type, which is really what matters most. The overall typing experience has been significantly improved thanks to a new key structure, an Apple-designed rubber dome, and other enhancements.

Esc is no longer hidden in the Touch Bar thanks to the addition of the MacBook Pro A2251 Magic Keyboard’s dedicated physical Esc key. Apple has also rearranged the arrow keys into an inverted-T configuration, making them easier to use.

The MacBook Pro A2251 comes with a 512GB non-removable SSD as standard storage, but you have the option to upgrade to 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB.

There’s not much to look at here, especially if you go for the less expensive 13-inch MacBook Pro model. There are only two Thunderbolt 2 ports and a headphone jack on the left and right sides of the system, respectively.

MacBook Pro ports

But you can connect more peripherals simultaneously with Apple’s high-end model A2251, which offers four Thunderbolt 3 ports.

Thunderbolt 3 creates an accelerated universal port by fusing the adaptability of USB-extreme C with its ultra-high bandwidth. Plus, your MacBook Pro has up to four ports that let you charge, transfer data, or stream video from anywhere.

final verdict

I absolutely like the MacBook Pro A2251 (2020), but the newer Macbook Pro model with the M1 processor is a better option overall because Apple Silicon offers faster performance and longer battery life. If you’re looking for a more powerful machine, you might also want to consider the iMac Pro I7.

If you want to stick with Intel and have four Thunderbolt 3 ports instead of two, this version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro is still the best option.
