Macklemore speaks at pro-Palestinian rally in DC where demonstrators called for destruction of Israel: ‘This is genocide’

Rapper Macklemore said it was “beautiful to watch” the huge crowd at a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Washington DC Saturday, where tens of thousands turned out to call for a ceasefire and the destruction of Israel.

“They told me to shut up, they told me to do my research, to go back, that it’s too complicated to say anything, to be quiet at this time,” the singer, whose legal name is Benjamin Hammond Haggerty, said from the podium.

“In the last three weeks, I’ve been back and I’ve done some research, I’m teachable,” the “Thrift Shop” singer told the crowd. “I don’t know everything, but I know enough to know that this is genocide.”

He stated in his brief speech that he was not the most “qualified” to speak on the controversy.

Thousands of people turned out in the capital, chanting: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” and blaming President Joe Biden and other American politicians for Saturday’s massacre. The chant is widely considered antisemitic because it implies the annihilation of Israel and its people.

The rapper said he was “deeply hurt by the Israelis who lost their loved ones,” but did not believe in “killing innocent people as revenge.”

“This is why I support people around the world who are calling for a ceasefire. We are witnessing the genocide that is happening in Palestine right now.”

At the DC event, many speakers blasted the President, especially his pledge to send $14 billion in aid to Israel.

“Biden, Biden you can’t hide! We charge you with genocide!”

Supporters attend a rally protesting the deaths of 9,000 Palestinians in Gaza due to airstrikes following a Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7.

A spokeswoman for the Chicago Chapter of the US Palestinian Community Network said Biden had “dehumanized” the Palestinians, and that “Israel has no right to exist as a racist state.”

Marte White, who said he was from the Community Movement Builders – a nationwide Black activist group – said that “Israel can go to hell.”
