Madhulika Rawat is the wife of the first Chief of Defense Staff of the Indian Army Bipin Rawat. She served as President at the Defense Wives Welfare Association (DWWA). Madhulika was killed in a helicopter crash on December 8, 2021 along with her husband, Bipin Rawat.

Madhulika Raje Singh Rawat was born on Thursday, 7 February 1963 (age 58 years; at death) in Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh. He attended Scindia Kanya Vidyalaya, Moti Mahal Road, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, and pursued his studies in psychology from Delhi University, New Delhi.

Parents & Siblings

His father, Mrighendra Singh, was the Riyasatdar of Sohagpur Riyasat, Shadol, Madhya Pradesh. He served as Congress MLA from Shadol in 1967 and 1972. He is the second child of his parents and has an elder and a younger brother. One of his siblings is Yashwardhan Singh Rawat.

Career

He works for the welfare of dependents of Army personnel. He is also associated with various welfare programs that work to help widows of martyred soldiers. She worked to provide employment to the wives of military men by encouraging them to take various courses in sewing, bag knitting, and making bakery products. Earlier, she served as president of the Army Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA). In 2021, she was appointed as the President of the Defense Wives Welfare Association (DWWA).

Death

On 8 December 2021, while he was traveling in a Mi-17 V5 from Delhi to Sulur, the helicopter crashed near Wellington Military Centre, Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. He was accompanied by Bipin Rawat, Brigadier LS Lidder (CDS defense assistant), Lieutenant Colonel Harjinder Singh (CDS special officer), PSO Naik Gursewak Singh, Naik Jitendra Kumar, Naik Lieutenant Vivek Kumar, Naik Lieutenant B Sai Teja, and Havildar Satpal inside helicopter. Later, the Indian Air Force, via a tweet, announced the tragic deaths of Madhulika, her husband Bipin Rawat, and 11 others, who were killed in a helicopter crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu. Group Captain Varun Singh was the sole survivor of the accident.

With deep regret, it has now been confirmed that General Bipin Rawat, Mrs. Madhulika Rawat and 11 others on board have died in the unfortunate accident.

On the death of Madhulika and Bipin Rawat, Chhattisgarh minister TS Singh Deo said,

Madhulika Rawat is a close family associate and often visits us in Bhopal. Madhulika ji, wife of Late General Bipin Rawat is a close family friend. She is the daughter of Late Shri Mrigendra Singh ji of Suhagpur (MP) and used to visit us in Bhopal. My heart goes out to their families. May they find strength to face this unimaginable loss.”

cremation

On December 10, 2021, her husband, Bipin Rawat, was cremated at Brar Square crematorium in Delhi cantonment with full military honours. Madhulika’s body was also laid on the same pyre.
