Magnet fishermen shocked to pull live WWII grenade from canal, sparking bomb scare

Magnetic fishermen almost had their hobby literally blow up in their faces after accidentally digging up a live grenade from a canal in Scotland.

“The nerves kicked in,” one of the anglers, Bob, told South West News Service of the heartbreaking incident, which happened on October 10 in Linlithgow.

He specializes in the growing sport, where people use magnetically tipped ropes to catch unexpected metal artifacts from bodies of water.

This particular group is known for uploading their catches — which include old train lights, ammunition boxes and more — to their more than 475,000 followers on their TikTok channel, “Magnet Fishing Edinburgh.”

The couple discovered their hobby was da bomb in more ways than one after accidentally transporting a grenade during World War II while fishing from a bridge on the Union Canal.

“At first, we couldn’t find anything, so we took a break to get some food,” Bob recalled. “Our second throw was when we found the grenade and realized the situation we were in.”

Despite being nervous about the discovery, the couple tried to stay calm and “make sure everyone was safe and sound,” he said.

“There were a few people walking by who we advised to walk around the other route,” recalled Bob, who later alerted authorities to the situation.

“Once we got it, we ended up calling the police, and they got a squat bomb to come and take care of it,” he said. “The officer came and told us, ‘We’ve got good news and bad news – the good news is that you’ve saved Linlithgow, but the bad news is that your magnet is going to be blown up with a grenade.'”

The bomb technician then took the grenade to a local field and detonated it at a safe distance from everyone.

In a similar discovery in 2019, a magnetic fisherman dredged up a World War I-era grenade from a river in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
