Mahira Kakkar was born in Calcutta, India. He got his early education in Calcutta, India and then moved to America to further his education. She was given the name ‘Mahira’ by her grandfather, which is derived from the Urdu word Mahir meaning “talented.” She attended Modern High School for Girls, La Martiniere for Girls. When he was just 10 years old, he started to love the Bolshoi and Kirov ballets in Calcutta, and he hardly missed any ballet concert in the city and his parents always supported him in his interests. During her childhood, she aspired to be a ballet dancer, actress, or rock star. He actively participates in extracurricular activities at his school. He studied Bharatanatyam dance and Indian classical music and also won prizes in elocution competitions held at school. Later, he received a gold medal in English Literature from Jadavpur University in Kolkata. According to Mahira, this institute helped her gain experience and knowledge that goes beyond books. Shortly after this, Mahira spoke at the Juilliard School Drama Department in New York City. Although it was not easy for Mahira to enroll herself in the Drama Department of the Juilliard School, she was quite confident in her skills and while addressing the head of the Drama Department, she said,
You have to accept me. You haven’t seen anything like me yet.”
Harold Guksin was her mentor when she attended the Juilliard School’s Drama Department. After attending a drama academy, Mahira gradually stepped into regional theater and television.
