Maksim Chmerkovskiy Explains Why He Isn’t Returning To ‘DWTS’

“Dancing With the Stars” returns for its 32nd season, with Julianne Hough tapped to take over from Tyra Banks as co-host while “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” actor Alfonso Ribero returns as co-host. Hough’s brother, Derek Hough, will return to the judges’ table alongside Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli.

The full cast has been announced, with many professional dancers, including Peta Murgaroyd and Jenna Johnson returning with their celebrity friends, however, one iconic name is missing from the list — Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

Maks Chmerkovskiy hasn’t danced on the ABC competition show since season 25 when he was paired with Vanessa Lachey, when he announced his retirement. Since his wife, Peta Murgatroyd, his brother, Val Chmerkovskiy, and Val’s wife, Jenna Johnson, are all on the show, many are wondering if Maks will also come back and come out of retirement.

Unfortunately, for Maks fans who want to see him on “Dancing With the Stars” again, it’s not going to happen. “First of all, as a business side, I was in a contract that I extended a few times, but when it stopped being extended, it was a mutual decision,” Chmerkovskiy told The Blast exclusively.

“The reality is we just grew up,” he added. “You can’t expect Michael Jordan to keep playing even if you want to see him do that, and I think it’s very similar. [situation].”

Chmerkovskiy went on to explain how he “felt like I had to move on” because the show was “going through some changes and some transformations”.

“Today, the show is like a full circle, and back to the format I love more,” he told The Blast. “A component like Alfonso [Ribeiro] took over Tom Bergeron’s role first. It was a huge moment in the development of the show.”

He added, “I believe the line-up is great, and I feel like a fan and I want the show to stay and I want to continue to help promote it and I’m doing that because I’m still a dancer, I’m still dancing, I’m not dancing on television.”

The professional dancer went on to explain how he feels if his wife wasn’t Peta Murgatroyd, his brother wasn’t Val Chmerkovskiy, and Val wasn’t married to Jenna Johnson, this conversation wouldn’t be happening.

“I think if I don’t marry Peta [Murgatroyd]and if my brother wasn’t Val [Chmerkovskiy]and [his wife] not Jenna [Johnson], I believe we will not have this conversation,” he told The Blast. “I think so [the show] sort of move on to other things and people will stop asking me about it, but I think every year it’s a Peta, Val, Jenna and [then people ask] ‘you’re going there too?’

“Why do I want to? Mathematically, there is more Chmerkovskiy on the show than ever before,” he said with a laugh. “So for me, I think it’s great, let’s face it, I’m a fan at this point.”
