In 2020, when American actor Robert Hoffman, who is stranded in India at the exact time the epidemic hits the country, sees Maleesha in Mumbai when she and her family come to Robert’s set to find work and act as background actors. Robert was immediately drawn to Maleesha’s story, good academic scores, and her potential to become a good model and dancer. After that, he became her agent and started sharing her videos on social media with the consent of her family; the pictures got a lot of good response from viewers who praised her beauty.

Maleesha lives in one of the slum shelters in Bandra, Mumbai. In an interview, he talked about the hardships his family faced and said that they considered it a luxury if they could eat two meals a day. On the GoFundMe page, Maleesha explained her story and revealed her living conditions, especially during the monsoon season and said,
The only thing I don’t like is that many times my brother and I don’t have enough to eat, and it’s hard for me to get water. After all, in a month the monsoon will come. It’s hard for us to sleep when it rains because we don’t have a roof. We use a plastic tarp, but the wind can be very strong in the Monsoon season. People often ask me if living in a slum makes me sad, and this question always confuses me because I love my house so much! This is where I live.”

Prada to Nada-but-versa!
After Maleesha’s story went viral across the world, she got the attention of several media houses. She started modeling at the age of 12 and when she started earning, she moved into a 1BHK room with her family, leaving the slum, in Bandra. In 2021, she was featured in a short film called Live Your Fairytale directed by Arsala Qureishi and Jas Sagu. The film is based on the true experiences of five slum children, including Maleesha, who visit a restaurant for the first time in their lives.
