Mame Khan was born and raised in a small town called Satto near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. He belongs to the Manganiyar Community, which has carried the tradition of singing for 15 generations. He learned to sing through listening to his father and family members.

Career

He started singing at a very young age, with his tribe performing in weddings, childbirth or various ceremonies. He has sung with his tribe members in over 60 countries. Mame Khan’s first performance abroad was in Central Park, New York. He got his first break with the song “Bawre” in the movie “Luck By Chance (2009).”

  • He was invited to sing at Ila Arun’s wedding. It was there when he was spotted by Shankar Mahadevan (Music Composer), who gave him his first break “Bawre” in the film Luck By Chance (2009).
  • He was originally a Dholak Player.
  • It was during his world tour in 1999 in Belgium that he left his Dholak in Belgium. When they returned to India, he was unable to perform for a week. That’s when his father suggested him to sing.
  • They follow a style called Jhagra, which features unique instruments like ‘Kamaicha’ and ‘Khartal.’
  • During her childhood, she received many prizes at school for singing in National Festivals.
  • She gained recognition through her appearance on Coke Studio with Amit Trivedi. He sang “Chaudhary.” The song was also featured in the Indian TV series “Balika Vadhu.”

  • He often says that everything in his community is oral. It is also the cause of some of their traditional melodies being lost over time. He wanted to keep a record of everything they made so future generations could learn and archive it in their music forever.
  • His music includes various Sufi poets including Mira Bai, Kabir, Lal Shahbâz Qalandar, Bulleh Shah and Baba Ghulam Farid and popular Bollywood songs in his own twist.
  • One of Mame Khan’s famous songs is “Kesariya Balam.”
