Mamukkoya

Mamukkoya (1946-2023) was an Indian actor, who worked mostly in Malayalam films. He appeared in more than 450 Malayalam films, mainly in comic roles. He was the first person to receive the State Award for Best Comedian in Malayalam cinema. On April 24, 2023, he suffered a heart attack, and two days later, he died of a brain hemorrhage.

Mamukkoya (also spelled Mamukoya) aka Mamukka was born on Friday, 5 July 1946 (age 76 years; at death) in Pallikkandi, Malabar District, Madras Presidency, British India (now Kozhikode, Kerala, India). His zodiac sign is Cancer. In Kerala, he attended Primary School in Pallikandi, GVHSS Kuttichira Senior High School in Kuttichira, and MM High School in Kozhikode. While he was studying at school, he performed in various stage plays. After completing his schooling, he started working in a timber yard in Kallayi. He used to work in a lumber yard during the day and perform in stage plays and nukkad nataks at night. He also used to sell mud and moringa leaves and sticks. Later, he joined a cultural troupe called Saigal Arts Productions.

Death

On April 26, 2023, he died of a brain hemorrhage. Earlier, on April 24, 2023, while he was in Malappuram, Kerala, to inaugurate the sevens football tournament at Wandoor, he suffered a heart attack. He was then immediately rushed to a private hospital in Kozhikode, Kerala. However, after two days, his health began to decline, and he died of a brain hemorrhage. On his death, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan shared his grief through his Twitter account. He tweeted,

Mamukkoya, with its lively and novel performances on screen, has enthralled film buffs across Kerala for decades. His sudden passing is a great loss to the industry, the art world and the public sphere of the state. Joining the grief of family, friends, and the world of film.”

  • Since his school days, he likes to play football. Even in his old age, he used to play various football matches with his friends.

  • In an interview, he shared that he was born into a poor family. On her wedding day, she had no shoes to wear. He had borrowed shoes from one of his friends for the wedding.
  • He shares a good bond with Vaikom Muhammad Basheer (writer), SK Pottekkatt (writer), and MS Baburaj (music composer).
  • During the post-Babri Masjid demolition phase, some Congress leaders asked him to campaign for one of their candidates for local body elections in Wayanad, Kerala. He agreed with him, and when he was invited on stage to promote the Congress candidate, instead of supporting the candidate, he urged people not to vote for the Congress, because it was their government’s decision to demolish the Babri Masjid. The Congress leader was shocked to see the answer. Mamukkoya then says that he cannot lie to people and that he will do whatever he feels is right. Reportedly, after this incident, no political party invited him to campaign for them.
  • Mamukkoya used to support various social campaigns. At various events, he spoke about unity and brotherhood among the community. He once questioned the concept of haram and halal in Islam. He said, in Islam, photography is considered haram, but when the passport is required to visit the holy places of Hajj, it becomes halal.

  • His unique style of speaking Mappila’s Islamic language in the films was liked by the audience.
  • After his death in 2023, an Indian sculptor named Unni Kanayi shared that a few days before his death, Mamukkoya had called Unni and asked him to build a large sculpture of Karinthandan, a martyr from Wayanad. However, he died before his wish could be fulfilled.
