A 33-year-old man allegedly sprayed two victims with an unknown substance as he shouted “Gas the Jews” in front of a synagogue in Washington, DC Sunday morning, according to police and reports.
Brent Wood is accused of spraying the two victims as he shouted antisemitic slurs outside Congregation Israel Kesher around 9:30 a.m., authorities said.
He allegedly yelled, “Gas the Jews” as he applied the foul-smelling substance, sources told NBC 4 Washington.
No injuries were reported and it was not clear if the victim was connected to the synagogue.
The suspect was detained and his car searched as a precaution, but no dangerous substances were found, Metro Police said.
Wood, who is from Toledo, Ohio, was arrested and charged with simple assault and resisting arrest.
The incident is being investigated as a possible hate or bias crime, authorities said.
Crime classifications can be changed at any time as more information is gathered, according to Metro Police. However, even if it is later deemed a hate crime by investigators, it does not mean prosecutors will automatically charge it as a crime, police said.
The attack comes amid a nationwide rise in both antisemitism and Islamophobia linked to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
