A man accused of carrying a leather bag full of drugs in Tennessee allegedly choked the police officer who arrested him – and bit off a chunk of his ear, police said.
Marcus Johnson, 43, was arrested around 5 a.m. Tuesday when a Memphis officer pulled him over and found his car with another vehicle’s license plate, WREG-TV reported.
During the stop, the officer said, he saw Johnson throw a brown leather bag on the ground and proceeded to provide identifying information that actually belonged to a female driver.
When the officer moved to arrest Johnson, the suspect allegedly grabbed the officer in a choke hold and began trying to strangle him.
Johnson then bit the officer’s right ear, tearing off a piece as he began punching the officer in the face and chest, according to court records.
The suspect also took the officer’s gun and a Taser during the fight, but police were able to retrieve it and subdue Johnson, police said.

When other officers arrived, they found that Johnson’s allegedly discarded leather pouch contained drugs, including marijuana, fentanyl, methamphetamine, ecstasy and Xanax.
Both the officer and Johnson were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis for medical treatment.
Investigators later discovered that Johnson’s license was revoked and that he was also driving without proof of insurance, according to the affidavit.
Johnson is charged with attempted murder in the second degree, resisting arrest and criminal impersonation.
He was also charged with four counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture, deliver or sell, driving while license suspended, violation of finance laws and violation of vehicle registration.
Johnson was booked into the Shelby County Jail and is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
