Man dies after breaching airport security door, climbing into Delta plane’s engine

A man who breached security at Salt Lake City International Airport on New Year’s Day was found dead in the engine of a Delta plane waiting to take off with 100 people on board.

Kyler Efinger, 30, was found “partially inside the wing-mounted engine” of the commercial plane after the manager of an airport store reported a disturbance involving passengers in a secure section of the terminal shortly before 10 p.m., police said.

Before airport police could reach him, Efinger — a Park City resident who had a boarding pass for a flight to Denver — somehow made it through an emergency exit and ran out into the airport, Salt Lake City police said.

At 10:10 p.m. – more than 15 minutes after he passed through security – he was found unconscious inside one of the engines on a Delta Airbus A220-100 being de-iced before flying to San Francisco, officials said.

He had run to the plane and “crawled into the plane’s malfunctioning engine,” the airport said.

Salt Lake City police and airport staff found personal items, including shoes and clothing, dumped on one of the airport’s runways.

They asked FAA air traffic controllers to tell the pilots of the affected aircraft to shut down their engines once they learned Efinger was under the plane.

First responders pulled him out of the engine intake cowling, which directs air into the engine’s fan section, and attempted life-saving measures including administering naloxone. However, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The plane’s engine was spinning at the time Efinger was found, although the airport initially reported it was malfunctioning. Salt Lake City police said they were investigating “certain circumstances of engine operation.”

“It is unclear at this time what injuries caused the man’s death,” the airport said.

The medical examiner’s office will determine the exact cause and manner of death.

There were two pilots, three flight attendants and 95 passengers on board Delta Flight 2348 at the time, the airline said. The plane returned to the gate and all passengers were rebooked on another flight.

“As nothing is more important than the safety and security of our customers and the public, Delta is fully cooperating with all aviation authorities and law enforcement investigations,” an airline spokesperson told The Post Tuesday.

Police along with the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Transportation Security Administration are investigating the safety violations and deaths.
