Man drowns in lake outside SoFi Stadium in California

A man drowned in a lake outside SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on Friday, the second death to occur in a man-made body of water since the stadium opened in 2020.

The unidentified man, believed to be in his early 20s, entered the lake around 9:30 p.m. but never resurfaced, Inglewood Police Lt. Cilia Islas told the LA Times.

Police said a team of divers was immediately dispatched to search the 15-foot-deep lake to find the missing man.

The man’s body was found shortly before 11pm by rescuers, who tried to give him CPR to revive him.

After failing to save the man, he was pronounced dead at the scene, Islas told the outlet.

Police said an investigation was launched into the man’s death because Islas described the incident as accidental drowning.

The name of the victim is now kept confidential by the authorities.

“It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of an individual this afternoon,” SoFi Stadium officials said in a statement to the outlet.

“Our condolences to the family and friends of the individual for their loss. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

It is unclear whether the victim was a participant in the event.

His death marks the second time an individual has drowned in the lake outside SoFi Stadium, home to the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, since the venue opened in September 2020.

A 45-year-old man previously died after plunging into the dummy in July 2022.

Stadium security guards saw the man under surveillance jump a fence in the stadium parking lot before entering the man-made lake.

Divers from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s Special Enforcement Bureau recover the man’s body from the lake more than three hours later.

Nicknamed “River Lake,” the 6-acre man-made lake holds nearly 11 million gallons of water, according to Arkitek Newspaper.

Rivers Lake also features multiple waterfalls and is designed to be an aesthetic addition to the stadium grounds.
