Man electrocuted after plunging into club’s waterfall during New Year’s Eve party

A 33-year-old man was electrocuted after jumping into a man-made waterfall at a Brazilian nightclub to cool off during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The unfortunate partygoer, identified as Marco Túlio Bomtempo, allegedly suffered a heart attack from an electric shock and died at the Bothanic club — a music venue in the city of Brasilia — just hours into the new year on Monday.

Joao Cunha, a friend of Bomtempo who was also at the club to celebrate the new year, told local news channel G1 that revelers had announced that he would dive into an artificial waterfall to cool off on his way out of the party.

Cuhna said Bomtempo took off his shirt and handed it to a woman he was with, before taking the risk.

“When he jumped, I saw that he didn’t say anything else,” the friend told the news channel.

Cuhna then follows Bomtempo into the fountain and is also electrocuted, but a good Samaritan manages to pull him to safety.

First responders who raced to the scene pulled Bomtempo from the waterfall and reportedly spent the next 50 minutes trying to revive him before pronouncing him dead.

Bomtempo’s official cause of death will be determined by the Institute of Legal Medicine. The Civil Police has also launched an investigation into the death.

The club owner expressed his condolences to the Bomtempo family in a statement to G1. They insisted that they only rented the space for the New Year celebration and “did not participate in any way” in the organization of the event.

They described the waterfall where Bomtempto met his end as “an ornament, with the sole, clear and indisputable purpose of making the environment seem pleasant to all present. It was never used for bathing, as it clearly did not serve that purpose.”

During the dozens of events staged at the Bothanic last year, no one ever thought of jumping into the falls, the owner added.

“The place deeply regrets what happened, expresses deep regret for the death and offers solidarity to the young family of Marco Túlio Bomtempo,” the statement continued.

Organizers of the ill-fated festival rushed to defend themselves by pointing out that the waterfall “already exists as part of space.”

“It is important to point out that it was not the event organizers who built the fountain, it already exists there and is used in all Bothanic events without any previous accidents,” said the party planner.
