Man fighting for his life after being buried alive on beach, witness says scene was ‘pretty gnarly’

The man who fell into a five-foot hole and was buried alive in the sand on Bribie Island has been identified as Josh Taylor.

Queensland paramedics and the RACQ Lifeflight rescue helicopter crew were called to help the 25-year-old man after he fell into a hole and was buried in the sand on Bribie Island, north of Brisbane, just before 2pm.

Nathan, a witness to the incident who helped dig Taylor, told 7 News that the hole had been dug to cook pigs.

“He stood up from the chair, the sand was given a little under him,” he said.

“He stumbled backwards. He was going to put his hand to clear to break the fall, he kept going down and knocked the sand as he put his hand.

“He’s in a hole so you can’t see him, his legs, unless you’re standing over the hole.”

A group of people came to Taylor’s assistant, digging him up before tying a rope around his leg to pull him out of the hole.

“There are 15 fully grown men at the end of this rope and he still doesn’t budge,” Nathan said.

“At that time the paramedics pulled him here… . the suction gave way and he popped out.

“I pray that he gets through it.”

Taylor’s family are by his side at Princess Alexandra hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition, The Courier Mail reports.

Nathan was leaving the beach with his family when a group of men ran screaming for help to rescue their friend from under the sand, he told NCA NewsWire.

“All his family, screaming at us, telling us to help, telling us to get a rope so we can pull him out. It’s pretty horrible,” he said.

After some pulling and digging, the young man finally broke through the surface of the sand, but the force of the pull out caused him to be injured again, Nathan said.

“It was pretty maddening when he showed up. I threw up,” Nathan said.

“He’s broken. Suction, force, everyone pulls.”

When they brought him out, the man had no pulse and the rangers began CPR.

Rangers in the area also used a defibrillator before paramedics arrived.

A helicopter pilot landed on the beach to send RACQ LifeFlight Rescue Critical Care Doctors and flight paramedics as close as possible to the scene.

Rescuers later flew the man to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition for further treatment.

It is understood that it took 45 minutes before the man’s pulse recovered.

QAS paramedic Peter Batt praised the actions of the public who helped.

“The fact that they got a pulse back in this young man after a prolonged period of CPR, is proof that good CPR was done, it’s a credit to those who came in and helped with their first aid,” he said. .

Doctors at Princess Alexandra are now working to save the man’s life.

Paramedics told Nine News the tragedy happened at a beach gathering with friends.

The friends dug a hole in the sand and the young man fell headfirst into the hole before the sand collapsed around him, burying him alive, Nine reported.

Bribie Island, part of Queensland’s Moreton Bay region, is a popular holiday destination.
